RobesonsRme.com wrote:I have seen this old photo several times in my life. It popped up in one of those "Amazing Photos" links that appear at the bottom of our computer screens while browsing.
Fish was caught at Catalina Island, California, on September 3rd, 1903.
I haven't researched it to see if this record still stands....
I find it interesting that the fisherman was credited with landing the fish alone.
I wonder if such fish still swim our oceans.

Here's some bait for big fish.

A little Hawaiian tradition of rock stacking (cairns)...not the best examples I have seen, but happened to have the camera at the time.
I really wonder what made that perfectly round hole through the top rock and for what purpose.

I would say it was drilled at some point in time. The walls of the hole appear to be smooth.

As a diamond driller when I was much younger, I would say that is part of a 20’ lone hole.
After drilling a number of 20' long holes in a rock or granite wall; the holes have a small explosive placed at the bottom of the holes – and then the holes are filled with diesel fuel.
When the charge and fuel ignite, the wall cracks and the wall is then transformed to rubble.
That hole looks like some of that rubble. Ken

The Enterprise Manufacturing Co. produced an astounding number of fishing reels in it's time not to mention thousands of other assorted fishing items.
Here are two of their better quality reels, the Pflueger Templar.
Also a very unusually small Pflueger Capital.
Thanks for looking.

I agree. I have seen many rocks with holes like that while looking for geological specimens along road cuts. The wires behind the cairn indicate that some utility work was done in the area. Maybe it involved some blasting. By the way, Ken, now that I know you were a driller, does your user name refer to kobold?

Very fine looking reels, Joe. I remember as a boy my dad and I partly disassembling reels so we could clean and oil them after a fishing trip. That was fifty years ago. Now days I just use a cheap Zebco and wash the salt off of it. Great photos!

Thanks, Mel. At least you washed the salt off of it. If others had taken the 7 minutes to do that we would have a lot more great old fishing reels to enjoy.

Thanks Tommy, I thought you would like them. You've got some good old classic reels there.
It's really neat they're still being used.

The world record Bluegill was caught just outside Birmingham in Ketona Lake on a cane pole with black braided line, by a man fishing from the bank. I've seen that fish. It used to hang in a local hardware store. Unbelievable fish.

The world record largemouth bass, a record virtually unequaled for over eighty years, was caught around Waycross, Georgia, on a wooden lure made by the Creek Chub Bait Co. on a level wind casting reel.

Keep plugging with that steel rod, Tommy.

.........Charlie, I've still got the crumpled, dogeared articles from field and stream about both of those catches!!..saved them all these years. I also have a copy of the book "remembering George perry" by bill babb. several years ago, a photo of the fish finally turned up and was published in "bassmaster" magazine......makes my 11 1/2 pounder look like a sample!!!.......back in the mid-eighties, we were driving to parris island s.c., for my youngest son's graduation from boot camp, and I was , as usual, staying off the main roads, and we stopped somewhere in ga. and I asked the guy in the store if he knew if we were close to Montgomery lake, and he told me we were 20 miles from there, so I drove down there and found the marker on the highway, but the turn-off road looked so bad, I didn't try it. went back to the store and the old guy said the lake was about dry, the river over the years had changed course, and the lake wasn't near as large.........wish I could have seen it!!!........ ::tu:: .............

I wonder whatever happened to George Perry's Wiggle Fish?

I now wonder if you might not have it...... ::tu::

I'm trying to remember a story I heard years ago re' his death. He became a pilot and was ferrying a small plane to somewhere and crashed onto a golf course or something.

Seems like there was a strange twist to the event, something weird. I just cannot remember what it was.

I wish you could have seen that Bluegill. It was truly one amazing fish. Must have been three inches thick.

The "weird" part of George Perry's death was that he crashed right here in Birmingham.

I've seen the photograph of the fish. Impressive.

Nice photos, Ken! I agree that spring and early summer are beautiful times. Here along the Gulf Coast it is getting really hot now. I guess, or perhaps I should say, hope, that tropical storm Bill is not dumping too much on you right now.

Thanks Mel. Hasn't been above low 90s here yet, but humid. Only about 80 today and Bill has dumped about 4 inches of rain on us so far. Wind blowing 27 mph with gust to 40 so it's raining sideways
