Nice Model 71, CheckSix. I didn't know that about the cartridge or the gun. Had to scramble for my "Cartridges of the World".
Great story there too. It says the Model 71 was the smoothest lever action ever built.
It's always fun to learn of these things. Thanks. ::tu::

Yep! It's an improved Model 1886. Smooth and vey strong! It's a great rifle, that not too many in the lower 48 know about.

Here's what the 348Win cartridge looks like, compared to a 300WSM... and another photo showing some of the rifle cartridges I reload for. From left to right: 223, 243, .30-30, .30-'06, 300WSM, 348Win, 7mmSTW, 375H&H & 416Rigby. My favorite all-around cartridge, that will dispatch anything from mouse, to elephant is the 375H&H. Shoots a 270gr spire point at 2800fps, with the same trajectory as a .30-'06 180gr bullet... just a lot more wallop!!

That's a pretty impressive list of some fairly uncommon cartridges. Like you I love lever guns, older Marlins especially. The only one you're missing to make that list truly awesome is my favorite, .35 Remington!

CheckSix,
Showing that Model 71 brought up some bad memories for me :( . I was once the proud owner of serial # 20815. I traded an old boat for it but being much younger and not able to think ahead, I traded it for a Lyman Plains Rifle kit, my 1st M/L and a complete Lyman reloading out fit, all NIB from a wise old gun dealer ::facepalm:: . That was in the fall of 1977. This is just one of the many trades I've regretted over the years. I don't have a picture of it but the notes say it had detachable sling swivels and a buggered up screw on the right side of the barrel band. ::teary_eyes::
Hey, on the bright side I just bought a new Tagua holster that fits both my SCCY CPX-2 and my Ruger SR9! ::mdm::

Well dove season is about here and I'm about plumb out of shotgun shells. I haven't done any reloading since before my elbow surgery at Christmas either. So since the wife had sent me out to the grocery store anyway I decided to go down to one of the local gun and fishing stores (privately owned local place) that usually has a good selection of ammo just to see what they had. Needless to say, I came home with more than I intended to, that ever happen to anyone but me?

I bought a flat of Rio 20 gauge 1oz 7.5 shot shells, some HP 22 shorts, and a couple boxes of Rio 3 inch 6 shot .410 shells for the old Stevens 311 .410.

There's a few missing from the target box.

I just had to go run a few of those shorts I bought today through the old Marlin 39M. She likes em right well. I guess I just can't stand to have a full box of anything sitting around, LOL.

ESPN, it shoots much better than I can take advantage of. I rarely shoot paper, but the top of a 20 oz coke bottle ain't safe and its coke can accurate at 50 yards off hand.

In the hands of a good shot it'd be right impressive.

What makes it interesting, is the reflection of trees/sky on the left side. It made me stop and really look at it! Well done!

Finally got out and shot my Ruger AR-556 last week (owned it two months!) I was extremely pleased with the accuracy and reliability of the carbine - not a single malfunction of any type (mag, action, etc.) The carbine was most accurate with Winchester 5.56mm M855 FMJ ("Greentip" or LAP per the ATF). I need to stock up on that load soon. Ready for my next range session - I wondered why I waited so long to own one - felt very familiar in my hands. I do like the adjustable stock, none of my issue weapons (M16A1 and M16A2) ever had that feature. OH

Love the AR platform! Glad you like your new AR556!

I built this one last year from parts... It was built for accuracy, not light weight... so it is on the heavy side. EoTech holographic sight, Burris 3x swing in/out multiplier, hand lapped in Match barrel, Magpul adjustable stock, NiB coated carrier group, Houlding tactical quad rail, etc.
