Today, my mailbox produced these two knives. A "short-line" Camillus 72 (first one with no shield) and a NEAR MINT, Geo Schrade, wire-jack, hawkbill pruner. The pictures are my pictures. Click on a picture to ENLARGE.

Really nice handels on that Craftsman doglegg.
And that Camillus Short Line is nice as well N_W_NY.
Anyone know why it's called that? Is it shorter than normal?
Just wondering.

Tom, Starting right after WWII, Camillus changed their tang stamp.TPK wrote: And that Camillus Short Line is nice as well N_W_NY.Anyone know why it's called that? Is it shorter than normal?

Tom
The one used from 1946-1950 (generally accepted time frame by most everyone but me) which is commonly called the "short line" because it's shorter than the rest. Then from 1960 to 1976 (I maintain it had a longer run than that) they used a longer line. From 1989 to close of business they used a double line stamp. WARNING!!!! Camillus tang stamps are not set in stone and are not a reliable method of dating a Camillus knife. They only get you in a very loose ballpark.

This one arrived today and is my latest acquisition for the menagerie or zoo. This "moose head" fixed blade knife, no sheath, from COLONIAL. Please excuse the shadow on the blade in the first picture.

When thinking about the Camillus tang stamps, let's not forget the long line with the slanted letters during the '76-'89 (+/-) time.
It's listed on the chart in the tang stamp. https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kn ... &mode=view
I've got a couple electricians knives, TL-29 style, with this stamp.

Just got back from the post office with this knife. Another Camillus 72 variation by Remington, but NOT one of the three variations that I knew about. This is a Remington "R14" with the circle Remington shield and the circle REMINGTON, MADE IN USA tang stamp. However, there is NO pattern # (R14) stamped anywhere. So, to me at least, this is a fourth variation in regards to Remington. Yes it has the correct 3 blade, swelled center configuration and it is 3 5/8" long, closed. The first "picture" is of the description of the three variations that I knew of. The last four pictures are of the knife. It didn't require any cleaning at all.

That "wood" handled Remington variation is the one that I DO NOT have. There is a seller on eBay with two of the "wood" handle variations, with etched blades (yet another variation), but he wants $$. NONE of my 3 Remingtons have wood handles. As far as what type of wood the handles are made of, I have no idea. I'd like to believe that they're ebony, but I highly doubt it.espn77 wrote:I see in the first picture it says "wood handles" what kind of wood is that?New_Windsor_NY wrote:Just got back from the post office with this knife.
