I received a nice 1971 case stockman today. It was an impulsive but good buy for $50.

Great! I'm guessing, is the Craftsman a Schrade 3rd Generation Stockman with a handle inlay?

I'm a huge fan of Western steel, it takes such a keen edge, even I can make it sharp!!
I like the straight blade as opposed to the swooped up back Western's....not sure if I'm clear on that, but I scored
this off ebay for $19.99 and it will be my bushctaft/mission knife!!!

You’re welcome. That is one sweet knife. And yes that is a pulley for hay, I remember those in the barns I worked in, makes me shudder. I hated baling hay, I liked the money though when I was a teenager.
Glad you like that knife.

Dollar an hour or a penny a bale. Depended on who you were working for. I tried to get a dollar an hour if it was the second cutting or especially on the third cutting. A very few paid 1½¢ a bale. That was living large but they were few and far between.Sharpnshinyknives wrote: I hated baling hay, I liked the money though when I was a teenager.

Jerry, I had a farmer offer to pay me by the bale once, but I declined. I thought he was trying to take advantage of me. I figured he already knew how many bales were in the field and knew exactly what I would get paid. I had good reason to distrust him, he was my alcoholic step father. I won’t get into the abuse I suffered from him.
I wish I was still that age ,but not that work.

That was standard pay for putting up hay in Central Illinois in 1960. Buck an hour or penny a bale, at the end of the day, it usually came out fairly close to the same.Sharpnshinyknives wrote:jerryd6818 wrote:Dollar an hour or a penny a bale.
