That's a great lookin' bowl of Bluegills! Bigger Bluegills and such are especially good to me when they are big enough to filet. It's a job to clean those smaller pan fish. The smaller ones are what the kids usually catch. So we scale 'em, cut off their heads, pull the guts, a little trim here and there, mostly there, wash, season and a short time in the hot fish grease! Then you pull the dorsal fin and proceed almost like eatin' corn on the cob. The tail is usually eaten last as it makes a good handle . Where's the hushpuppies and the sliced onion .

Mike - looks like a great vacation! Hope it is a bit cooler up there than in my area! I usually do like Treefarmer and cook the Bluegills whole after scaling, heading, and gutting. I do that with smaller saltwater trout too. Most of the ones I catch are smaller ... sigh.

I am doing more fishing this summer than I have in several decades. Here is a Redfish I caught couple of weeks ago. It was too big to fry whole so I just slipped it back into the water for another day.

Wow Mel, fantastic Redfish!! You would need one heck of a big cast iron skillet to blacken that beauty!

In my state the record is about 45 pounds. That one was about 30. The smaller ones are really good eating, but I understand that the big ones are not so good: that is why I released that one. First and only Redfish that big that I have ever caught. Almost all of the fishing that I have done before this year was fresh water fishing, so I am still getting the hang of saltwater stuff.

Actually, I have never made blackened fish. I always fry! (Edit: I have never intentionally made blackened fish!)

Taught Sofia some basic whittling strategies...she has a growing collection of lady leg knives, I get her one every year for her birthday and Christmas....like most things outdoor related, she has taken right to it.

Took the boys to Starkey Park today.......
See if you can find them in the trees!
Made my first "illegal" fire (only supposed to be made in the campsites where the fire rings are.....)
Put up a tarp (thankfully it wasn't raining this time).
Ate apple, jerky....cut up some wood.
Just spent a few hours in the woods with my grandsons.
I LOVE IT!!

Oh.......by the way, see the black streaks on our faces? I used a little piece of cooled down charcoal to do that!

I agree about the rain. We have had plenty. The last day my wife and I went fishing (Tuesday) it rained on us. My wife put up a big umbrella but I was too stubborn for that. Just about the time that I was thoroughly wet my wife remarked that she did not mind the rain as long as there was not lightning. Well, those were ill omened words. It was less than five seconds after she said that when the first lightning hit nearby. Happily, that was the only nearby bolt, possibly because my wife did not mention it again!
