I had a Red-bellied Woodpecker at the feeder yesterday. His avian sixth sense told him that someone was about to take a photo.

Lots of birds around now. Mr. and Mrs. Dove.

Thanks, Mel! Those Doves look well fed!

BH, do you have woods nearby? I only see Redheaded or Pileated when I go to the woods, never in my yard. I have a fencerow of mature trees that hooks up to a woods about 1/2 mi away, and many types of birds will travel that fencerow to my house, but not those 2 particular species of Woodpecker.

I need some expertise, opinions at the least, on ID of this hawk. I took these photos quickly, from the window of my vehicle as I rolled to a stop. I was thinking at the time, that I had a Rough Legged, but I am not so sure. I never got a look at the tail from above to see if it had the white base for the R L, or red for the Red Tailed. Male, Female, juvenile, light morph, dark morph, etc...all the variations confuse me. So, what do you think?

Ike, I am sorry I cannot give a considered opinion on this. I've had too little experience with hawks to make a call. But I do think your photos are super. Great shots.

Great shots!
Based on the vertical strip on the shoulder area (second pic of yours, Ike), I'm going to say Red Tailed.

They're back! This bald eagle pair has returned to the same nest they have been using for the past several years. It is high up in a cottonwood tree on the banks of Skunk creek. Amazing as this is right on the edge of a residential neighborhood in Sioux Falls. They have raised several broods of chicks successfully over the past few years, and probably will again. It is only about 3 miles from my house, so I will be getting photos over the winter as the process goes on. This picture this morning with the Canon Xsi DSLR with Sigma 70-300mm lens set to 300mm.

Yes! I hadn't even noticed that. There is a good supply of them, both Grays and Fox, they don't bother me. Last year, I saw a Hawk carry one away from my yard.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

Ornithologists are reporting that White-Throated Sparrows in Canada have inexplicably changed their songs. The experts have no explanation.

My mom always said that you could catch a Robin by putting salt on it's tails. There was a cartoon once where a kid did it. The Robin said what do you know it works why trying to fly away. Sometimes even with heavy snow on the ground a robin comes to the heated bird bath on the deck rail.
