Good friend and Master Guild Member, Frank McGowan of Sykesville, MD made this Damascus hunter for me around 25 years ago. The massive handle was recycled from a beautiful, old Sheffield carving set. J.O'.

Clark, I picked up this Shapleigh's St. Louis Mo. fixed blade recently, no stag on the handle, but can you tell anything about it? When it might have been made? Why it doesn't say 'A.F. Shapleigh Hardware Co. St. Louis Mo.'? Thanks in advance

Thanks Tony, There's an interesting back story on the 78's. According to what I've read, all the blades were forged in the fifties after Queen management saw Randall's in Florida and returned to design the "78". The knife is a pleasure to hold, a real piece of cutlery art. Google the story, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. O'.

Nice knife, TOPDOG. From what I can decipher from this, they started using the Shapleigh's logo at the same time they started using the D-E (Diamond Edge) logo, around 1909. They used it for a while, but from that font on the tang it looks to be into the twenties. I'm just speculating though based on what i see in this article. I'm sure others know better than I.

Nice Ridgegrass. All such beautiful stag handles. I like that McGowan custom job with the Damascus blade, really impressive.

It doesn't say A.F. Shapleigh cause they made different stamps my stamp dates 1888-1902. Yours i take it from the Goins Encyclopedia of Markings is 1920-60 I don't anything bout fixed blades but could be around 1940's time frame if I had to guesstimate.
