I understand what you are saying...most people do more harm than good, but you can do a pretty good restoration with sandpaper if you have the patience. This is a 236 I cleaned up for my collection.BatJak wrote:

Not a Schrade, but a dandy little Ulster 55G with nice green bone scales. 3 1/4" long and tang stamped, ULSTER KNIFE USA. Mirror polished on mark side of clip blade. Shiny mint condition without a single speck.

Mustanger that's a super little Ulster.
The 55 you have must be the earlier version as the later had the same blades as the Old Timer 580T

I can't say just what the deal is with the Ulster #55 variations. Maybe something to do with the 3 1/4" length? I know of 6 variations on the #55. I have a couple, not including the red Bonite and the black birdseye. Those belong to someone else.Shearer wrote:Mustanger that's a super little Ulster.

In 1954 Ulster had 4 55's on their price list. Sure wish we could get them for these prices now.

LRV, It looks like they did the same thing with the #50 too. And one #50 is not on that list. The 50D, ('D' for deer?)
Ditto on the prices!

Ulster, Kingston and Imperial were kinda joined at the hip for some time during and after WWII. That may have something to do with the same knife having different tang stamp signatures. As you know we see that a lot after Schrade took over Ulster's factory. The Ulster has 50D stamped in large script on the pile side of the clip blade. I did not know about the Kingston knife.Shearer wrote: Mustanger I have a couple of knives like yours. The picture is the one that's stamped Kingston.

I have to up the number of #55 variations that I know of from 6 to 7. While searching for production dates for my 55G, I ran across this 55D in the 1959 catalog. Does anyone have one of these? I can't even find a picture of one.

Thanks for posting those, Grant. Now I'm up to 8 variations of the #55 with your 55D that has a drop point main blade. I really like that one! Odd how Ulster changed the main blades from clip, Turkish clip and drop point like that. The only constant seems to be that they are all 3 1/4" long with 3 blades until the 58OT came out.

Really amazing handles on those knives, Doug. Super nice additions to your Herman Williams museum! I'm curious what the handle material is on the knives. Especially the 148.

Re: My latest Schrade
Thanks for the good words. The material for all 4 came from Masecrasft Supply Co. The 148 has Black Raffir Stripe. Its a resin with some type of organic material in it...looks like strips of corn husks to me. Originally I had feathered buffalo horn in mind but you never know how much feathering you'll get and horn isn't thick enough. The other 3 are dyed poplar burl with Raffir used to stabilize it. The 171UH has the same material as the 153UH but was cut cross grain. They also make it with metal in the resin. Here's 3 more with Raffir.
33OT with Yellow Raffir Stripe 152 with Red Raffir Mesh...fine metal screen 152 with Blue Raffir Stripe
