I have tried over the years to like congress knives, but haven't been able to get into them at all. But, my recent experiment with a sowbelly stockman is hinting to me at what I need to do to like a congress. The problem for me with a congress is that "handfull of blades" feeling I have when I'm trying to use it. I have two congress patterns that I like to use even though I don't carry either one that much. One is a two blade Bulldog "transition" congress which has what looks to me to be the small blade from a canoe pattern at each end on a single spring. The other one is a Rough Rider congress whittler, a small, knife with a sheepsfoot main and two small pen blades in a whittler configuration. In both of these knives the other blade(s) ride(s) close enough to the frame to not have that pressure point in the fingers of a big 4-blade congress. I'm really liking the GEC with the wharncliffe main and coping secondary (wish it was a pen) that was shown earlier. Anyway, above you find why I am not over-run with congress knives like I am with some other patterns.

Here are pictures of the two I mentioned:

Here is the only full size 4-blader I have (and may become the subject of an experiment):

and lastly, a tiny 4-blade Fight'n Rooster with nice swedged blades and glitter stripe/Christmas handles:

The muskrat up there is a "stray".

It's a real cutie, but it is pretty small. Not nearly as big as it looks in that picture. - EJ
