I hate that you had to remove that tree but I guess it's better than it removing your house.

Water oaks that have some age on them tend to have limbs that die and as these random limbs hit the roof you can imagine the damage that could occur if a large limb hit on its' end. The trunk had grown to within about a foot of the eave! Somebody (I won't say who) wants to put a covered porch across the back of the house similar to the one on the front and this big old oak was in the way of that project. There is a large Live Oak in the front yard that covers the front half of the house, we had it pruned while they were removing the other tree. Y'all ought to see the pile of limbs I have to move ! I pulled all the large limbs along a fence row with a tractor, where folks could easily get to it to cut fire wood and the branches will be pushed up in piles and burned later in the winter. Saved a quite few bucks by doing this, rather than the contractor having to haul the debris to a land fill and pay a tipping fee. Wife says I'm too tight, I call it thrifty .

Feel for ya Treefarmer we had a big azz Maple that was just off the back of the garage our bedroom is in the loft of the garage-that thing was huge and provided lots of shade to the entire house and the neighbors house--man was that scary when they took it down--my buddy that cut it had his guys steady hauling lumber so didn't have to deal with that but when he ground the stump we give wood chips away to who ever wanted them for a month--the base was 6' across before grinding if that gives any idea how big this tree was Bo said it was the biggest Maple he ever cut and he'd been at it 30+ yrs. then--we still miss that tree

They've cut several trees in the neighborhood this summer. One was a really nice Pin Oak that still has me scratching my head as to why they took it down. Anyhow, they brought in an industrial chipper/shreader and ran limbs through it that were 12" - 18" in diameter.

Sorry you had to lose the tree Phil but a little preventative maintenance works wonders. What is it they say? "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Taking down an old tree is a sad afair,but then again nothing lasts forever.Plant a new one so your children or grandkids can enjoy it's lustre.

After readin' tendots post, I went to the front porch and counted at least 30 trees in what we call the front yard, so losing one for an "ounce of prevention" as Jerry stated is not a big deal. The shade the old oak afforded will be reflected in next summer's power bill , but once the sun travels to about 2 o'clock position, the big Live Oak in the front takes over providing shade. By the way the clean up is going well, was able to push/drag most of the limbs to a burn pile without having to get off the tractor, a bucket on the front of a farm tractor is worth its' weight in gold!

I love my trees and hate it when one of 'em gives up the ghost! But when it happens, I use 'em for the woodstove, so they end up providing cool in their lifetime and then warmth thereafter. Trees gooooood!!

For those I might have led to believe that in the Ozarks, it's all pretty sunrises, sunsets and beautiful scenic vistas...we do have our share of ugly here too!! (and no, I don't just mean me!!)

Here is my latest catch:an old machinists' tool box with an inscription inside(in pencil)dated March 1942 to a Mildred Clare. Wonder who she was;maybe the owner of the box?
Anyway I had to re-glue a couple of joints and re-carpet it with green felt and give it a coat of Red Oil(best wood preservative I've seen if you can stand the smell)and I now have another great knife storage box.Price:$85.
I am slowly replacing all my metal machinists' boxes with wooden ones as they are found.My next project is an old Gerstner that is leatherette covered(rather than bare wood)which will require a new back plate and two drawers as well as complete new leatherette which is available from Gerstner.
When I'm finished with it I will likely have a couple hundred dollars invested but I believe it will be worth it as it is the largest Gerstnser box I have ever seen.

Good looking box Ray. What do you use to tack down the felt? Spray contact cement?

Nice score--I saved one a couple years ago-what is red oil?? The one I salvaged I took 0000 steel wool to then rubbed tounge oil on it I've thought about re-doing the felt but never have--mine is the same size as your leatheret

"Red Oil". Don't know what Ray is referring to, but it made me think of Old Cedar furniture polish.

Very good Charlie! Actually is Arrow brand old French cedar oil polish.Bought a gallon of it at a yard sale for $3 and it will probably last me for about 300 years.

Fantastic looking old chests there. I've now got a half dozen kicking around that need this or that done to them. I keep saying that I'll work on stuff like that during the winter, but it never seems to happen. Plus, the "paying" customers come first...

Looking forward to seeing it restored!

My grandparents had one of those mounted just outside the back door to the house. They called it the "dinner bell" because grandma would ring it to call grandpa in out of the fields come dinner time (lunch). Fond memories.
