Great scores there, Dale. The flea markets are hit and miss around here. I end up having to hit a lot to get maybe one decent item.

Dale, that doweling jig should eliminate mal-placed handle pins on the knives you rework in the future.

We have one good old (meaning it has been there for years) flea market on the first Sunday of the month in a small nearby farming town.
It is hard to get a table there I am told, as the old time flea marketers have it sewed up, so that is about the only flea market I go to regularly. The old timers find the good stuff and they aren’t greedy, they don’t have to make it all at once.

I prefer estate sales 6 to 1 to garage sales. True estate sales, (not garage sales posing as an estate sale), usually have a bit of everything as they are selling the whole household, less what the family keeps. If the estate is from a guy who had a nice workshop you can get some good stuff. You have to know how much you can get things for at a junk store or a pawnshop so you don’t over pay. If the prices are too high, and some are, I usually check with the people running it and see if they are half priced on the last day. Many do that and if they want to get rid of stuff, you can get some real deals.

My wife & I are so burned out on garage sales, many of which are just junk sales for out grown kids clothes, old glassware & plastic utensils. We have gotten to the point we don’t unless we are driving right past one and see something interesting.
I guess we are jaded.

Estate sales are the place for old carbon steel butcher knives. I can get 'em .10 to a dollar. Rust\busted handles= perfect. Clean 'em up, reshape the blade, put antler scales and a leather sheath. You got a real knife now. Adios!!

Picked these nippers up at an antique store the other day....for $8. I'm sure they will come in handy in the shop.

I had a pair of those from my NCR days. I'll have to look and see if I still have them.

Those nippers are great. My Dad had some combo pliers with a side nipper that were made much like those. I'm wondering if they shared the same patent design.

Do you have any idea what the two screws on the inside of the handles were for?

Could the handles have been spring-loaded originally? Or, are they a stop mechanism to keep the cuttling edges from colliding?

After seeing the nippers that Kaleb was using, I have been on the hunt for a pair for my shop. When I saw these and then the price I about yelled out loud.(doesn't take much to excite me...)

They are spring loaded. I haven't messed around with those adjustment screws yet. I thought they might adjust the max opening of the jaws, but I don't know. I'm sure the curious side of me will win out and I will tinker around with it.

And they are marked, "BERNARD".

Not as old as those nippers GlennBad posted, but from the same patent design.

GlennBad's appears to have a greater mechanical advantage, as there are more levers involved in their construction.

Couldn't find 'em. No idea where they got to. Guess it doesn't matter. Haven't used 'em in years.

Man, let me check my stuff, I may have a pair like those also. They look so familiar...

Those are parallel jaw pliers. We had a habit of calling them "Bernards" because of the brand name. For a long time, I thought that was actually the style of pliers they were.

Even though I carried a pair in my tool kit, I never actually got a lot of use out of them but then I was an EDPeeper and didn't work on the mechanical stuff a lot.

I found those pliers that looked similar to yours. Mine are Sargents, and came in this Imperial combo kit.







Although, now that I think about it, it is possble that Imperial knife did not come as part of the kit, but that's how I got it.

Anyone else into pitchin' shoes? Here's my set of Ted Allen pro shoes. They're perfectly balanced and weigh in at exactly 40.5 oz. each. Ted was a 10 time world champion and designed these himself. This particular pair were made in the 60's.

We used to pitch shoes and washers when Grandpaw was alive. There was a permanent place for washers and it was no big deal to play shoes.

A LOT has changed since Grandpaw went away.

Yep, pitchin' shoes was just part of life, back when. Now they pitch "virtual" shoes on a playstation.

I do pitch a little WB but didn't know there was a world champion at it. A few years back me and the mrs. went to an antique store and there they were, only 4 shoes and the 2 poles. Since then I have found the other 2 needed for a set. Have it set up in the backyard, I mostly play with the neighbor now.

Growing up, my family and most of the people in Southern Illinois that I knew pitched washers.

Ted Allen was the first world champion, the first championship was held during the 1933 Chicago worlds fair. He also holds the record for the most consecutive ringers. If I remember right, it's like 76 straight. My record is 9 in 1 game!
