This is Mitzi, our second dog after CIDG.

We got her about thirty-five years ago when the boys were young.

She was a long haired dachshund/poodle mix and absolutely the most affectionate, people oriented dog we have ever had.

Unfortunately, we only had the blessing of her for four years. She had surgery at our vet’s and died in his office overnight. His method of informing us of that resulted in our changing vets. No empathy whatsoever.

I still miss her. Not nearly enough time with that precious animal.

A vet who has no empathy, or cannot show a bit of compassion, is in the wrong profession. Vet schools ought to test for that quality. Great dogs like Mitzi are a blessing. Sorry you lost her so quickly.

I agree Charlie. A vet’s “bedside manner” is important. I can see, with all they deal with daily, how they can become callous. But the really good ones understand their patients (the animals) and their clients’ (the animal owners) attachment to them.

Sarah and I were both at our respective jobs. She called to inquire about Mitzi and the vet said, “ Oh, she died.”

When I went to get her, they gave her to me in a black plastic garbage bag. No expression whatsoever of regrets or empathy/sympathy and no plausible explanation for why she died. I was and still am, convinced she died of an anesthetic complication, overdose or they did not properly recover her before leaving for the night. No one stayed in the office with the animals, which I assume is common practice.

I held my composure, took her to my truck and stood there and wept like a child.

We never took another pet to him and moved our two cats to our current vet.

Just one question Larry. Does the cat actually sleep on it? The cats I’ve known sleep anywhere they want to! ::nod::

The big guy is Tuukka. He was supposed to be a retriever/ border collie but the neighbors Great Pyrenees apparently snuck over for a visit. Big loving teddy bear taking care of his new brother Gretzky. (Yes hockey family). Gretzky is my wife's husky/ malamute. We had a 130 lb malamute, Nino, but found him a new home with a single girl when our granddaughter was born. Wasn't aggressive but not gentle enough to be around babies and small kids.

All great looking dogs Bill. I know they will thrive during the Iowa winters. How do they do in the summers?

We got them a kiddie pool which the husky loves. He also lays right on the air conditioner vent till he cools off. The Great Pyrenees cross doesn't like the water so much as just a good shade tree. He takes the heat pretty well and goes in the boat fishing with us if its just me and my wife.
