Your Keene is one of the first, if not the first, knives to be labelled an Arkansas Hunter! Made by Napanoch, most likely, as was a similar Wilbert Cutlery.

70 cents, in 1903!

The reverse tang is stamped: Napanoch Knife Co. N.Y.

The Keene Cutlery Co was probably their "cheaper" line of knives. Very similar to New York Knife Co., their cheaper knife line was Walkill River works.

For a price of 70 cents how could they do it?

If you consider that at that time period a working man's wage was only $1.00 to $1.25 per day, maybe it becomes a bit easier to understand how they did it. If you consider it cost a guy 60-70% of a days wages (before taxes) to buy a knife, the better question might be how did they afford to buy them.

By the way, you guys are sure posting some dandy knives.

That Ulster's blade is also pretty used up.

But I have to admit, the design of some of the old Ulsters had a little something that makes my pulse quicken a bit when I see them.

It is like they are perfection of design in some patterns.
I can think of no other company that has so many knives that I will buy even when their blades are all used up, just because I like the frame and the design of the knife.

This is a great thread, and you guys have posted some great knives. It's like going to a knife show and finding only the best on every table.

Here are some Robeson jacks. All these knives are pre-World War II.

I've chosen these because they each have something a little special about them.

I may add some more later.

Here is a swell center balloon jack like yours, it is a rare old pattern to find.

This one has ebony handles and is well used.

Here's another balloon jack. Also a well used one, this is from Wolfertz and is 3-3/4" closed.

I wonder if I changed my name to Charlie, if I'd have mint knives like them other two guys ?

Before I joined AAPK, my name was Fred and I didn't own any mint knives. When I joined, I used the name, "Charlie" and now every time I post one of my knives, they appear as mint on the website.

Here are some old Robeson MasterCraft jacks. These are the knives with a horse-shoe shaped bronze bearing around the tangs of the blades. The bronze bears on the backspring.

The etches read, "NEV-R-BIND OILESS BEARINGS".

I put one old butter & molasses celluloid handled equal-end on here, too.
