Maybe an answer to the general discussion about SandBar Stag

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

Okay Folks;
Here from the horses mouth is the written word on Sandbar Stag from one of the principals of Canal Street Cutlery Company. My inquiry letter is also there in his reply.

It would appear that until the rest of the knife makers that use the term
become as honest as CSCC that our work is not complete. Thank You Lobo for sticking to your guns. Thanks to all the rest for your fun work also, it has been and will be a blast.

Good morning,

The material we used was Indian Sambar Stag. I've
never heard of Sandbar Stag, and feel certain it was
a mistake.

Kind regards,

Dears Sirs;

The last we corresponded was Nov. 2005. Must say I am
still more than satisfied with resolution and CSCC in
particular.

The subject at hand, It seems that you have
manufactured a set of knives for Red Hill Cutlery with
a handle material called Sandbar Stag. If you would
may I please have an explanation or definition of what
Sandbar Stag is? It is my opinion that the term was
coined by Mr. Parker as possibly an error when he was
referring to the Indian Sambar Stag.

You are the professionals so I am probably in error.
If so then I would appreciate a reference to and
definition(explanation)of Sandbar Stag. When you
answer I would like your okay to pass it on to many
friends in the collectors community.
Thank You Very Much,
William B. Cox
Astoria, Or. 97103
PS; Congratulations, It appears that CCSC has taken to
the market with great success.

The ccsc in the post script was a mistype in my mail. It of course should have been CSCC. W.B.

I will go along with Bill, if this news is true. This is one time JP should have copyrighted that term. Guess he did not see that far into the future.

To All;
I did not have any intention of denigrating Hukks information. I believe completely that his info was exactly as he stated. Read my letter carefully. The time stamp is PST the rest is atlantic time. Note that at
the end of my second paragraph I provided an out that was real close to the answer Hukk recieved from RED HILL.

I remain convinced that Canal Street is a viable company and this will only make them better.

The information that I posted was purely that of one individual at Red Hills Cutlery. I made a big mistake by not contacting Canal Street Cutlery and I apologize for that error, I do know better. :oops: :oops: From what this person said, he was making no mistake and is a reflection of Red Hills Cutlery, NOT Canal Street Cutlery. I believe Canal Street Cutlery to have the highest standards and are an extremely ethical company that puts the customer first. They are a young and growing company with extremely high quality standards, their first rate reputation grows with every release. I collect them for an extremely good reason, they are good and getting even better in the eyes of this collector as well as many others.
Therefore I made a huge mistake by taking the word of this dealer and not going DIRECTLY to the manufacturer. I just may go to Canal Street Cutlery now, as I find the Red Hills Cutlery response a bit offensive (Grandma is from Arkansas) and may be a dig at Jim Parker, whose knives I've collected since the mid/late 80's. There are a couple other reasons I should contact Canal Street Cutlery about this dealer, nothing to do with his statement, so I will leave that alone.
Once again, I apologize for taking the word of a dealer at Red Hills Cutlery :oops: and not following through with a call to Canal Street Cutlery, they had absolutely nothing to do with the statement that I posted. Thanks for understanding. ::tu::

No apology necessary from this viewpoint my friend. We're all just exchanging information and learning together. ::nod:: ::tu::

Hi Bill, I felt an apology and an explanation were in order. I worked in high technology for many years, I know better than to take the word of one person. I did not want this to be a reflection upon Canal Street Cutlery when in fact it comes frm Red Hills Cutlery. I was preparing for left knee surgery that went well on 8/24 and just got in a hurry and did not follow through as I'm trained. I am writing to Canal Street Cutlery about a couple things this individual told me, very unethical and I will keep that between me and Canal Street Cutlery. I strive to be ethical and correct, I will say so when I feel I'm wrong. By not following through, I'm wrong, being in a hurry is not a viable excuse.
I do thank you for your input though, Thanks Bill. ::tu::

Hey Hukk, I do not think you owe anyone an apology and I was not disputing your word. I was going to PM you about it , but since you brought it up and you feel like it, that's cool.

My thinking was;
Is that what an owner/empolee of a business told you the term came from?
I wanted to see if they actually thought that. Sounds too much like the Kabar story, or if the employee even knows who JP/Creator is or was.
That was all I was concerned about.

9ball

BTW:Hope your knee deal gets okay too. I had mine scoped back in 88 and was on my feet in three days. Gets sore sometimes in rainy weather, I wear a brace doing hard labor and like you, swim alot.
No problem

I figured I owed an apology because I used only one source and really his comment was in poor taste. I did write Canal Street Cutlery about a few other things he mentioned, but I did not mention here. I don't have a good feel for Red Hills Cutlery ater talking to the guy, rather unethical. It was as far as I know an employee, but Red Hills Cutlery is in a lumber yard and is in Kentucky, I figured that he had to have known of JP. I like to have some semblance of integrity, but this just did not feel right. So, I just did what I felt was correct and will let it go from here. Thanks

Thanks to the doctor, I'm walking indoors today, the day after and use a crutch outside, tomorrow I will walk some outdoors. They sure have made some advances! He did it so fast, it must have been a 5 blade knife he used. :lol:

This time it means super salmon. A neighbor of a fishing guide friend of mine.
I thought it looked a quarter of a 200lb tuna.
W.B.

Hukk; Hope your knee is up to one like this soon. Caught on a bobber rig
roe and ?. Use either a 5-0 or a 6-0 barbless of course to be sporting.

WOW :shock: ::drool::
Filled my freezer with Salmon and Abalone before surgery and 1 more surgery to go, but the biggest salmon I got was about 22 LBS in the last month. Look at the girth on that baby--WOW. The biggest I ever got was 34 LBS. You got a beauty there, the big one did not get away! You'll need a sizable fillet knife for that one. King Salmon, one of the best fish in the sea.
I'll have to wait until next year, congrats on that hog! If you don't use barbless hooks around here you will get a ticket. We can't keep silvers down here, yet so many have been fined for keeping them. A game warden stands right at the boat launch and hands out tickets to these guys.
Thanks, but my other knee is in September, same injury, probably from power lifting years ago without knee wraps.

Hukk;
Sir, thanks for the thought but you misread my post. It was caught by a neighbor of a friend of mine who is a guide.

The best fighter is a 25 to 30 lb bright. They will leave you as a quivering mass of jello when landed. The big ones are just hard to steer.
W.B.
PS my friend said his new locator shows relevant size and it looked like a bunch of big footballs at 12 feet in 27 feet of tidewater.

Sorry about that, yes the big ones tend to steer you, logs. Brights, I still need to do some river fishing, all of mine have been in the ocean, that figures doesn't it. I took my son for his first salmon trip on a party boat out of Bodega Bay back in June. We went on a 6-pack, a 25 ft boat that only carries 6 people, a much better experience for him than a 65 ft boat that crams 33 anglers on it. Well, he put on a fishing clinic for the boat. The boat limit is 12, he caught 5 and I caught 2. His first trip and he caught nearly half the salmon, bigger than mine too, proud dad! A boat limit is legal in CA, some places it is not.
Those fish finders have come a long way since I first used one about 10 years ago. Thats a "wild fish", I can see the andispose fin is still there. All the fish from the hatcheries have that clipped off, I assume it's the same there.

At risk of beating a dead horse (or stag in this case) it seems we have another confirmed sighting of the infamous SandBar. Third line down in the description. At least the seller is aware of the rarity. :o s-k

Hey;
Funny you should bring it up again. Just yesterday I checked Red Hill cutlery site and they are still selling a boxed set of sandbar stag canal street knives even though CSCC has said that there is no such thing,
Hukk, did you get any response from Red Hill when you inquired. Seems as you say S-K its beating a dead horse but I still think it deminishes CSCC's stature both now and out into the future. Who wants to own a lie, the truth is more valuable and easier to deal with.

OK then...I'm feeling much better.

Now, here is an interesting thread about that particular pattern...

Bernard gets a bit acerbic at times... :shock: ...but he does know knives and knife history very well. And, he lives up there near the Mossy One...Maybe he'll bring beer to the POOL party?

SANDBAR still looks like marketing the style of treatment of the handles, and nothing more, to me... ::nod:: ...but I just sent that horse on his way. ::tired::

No response at all from CSCC, guess they could care less. Still, they do have nice knives. Red Hill says Sambar and Sandbar are the same thing. Remember, they're the ones with the idiotic can't spell thing.

Lobo;
Sir; I do believe there may be anecdotal similiarities between a prized Quarter Horse stud that just started shooting blanks and a prized handle
on a knife patterned after a mythological creature. One of those similiarities is being worth something less than the asking price.

WB,

Quite philosophical there my friend... ::nod::

Of course the salesman never stops selling...even if some of his calls produce no results...the pitch is always being refined.

Didn't Joan Collins do a movie about a STUD? Or was that something different? ::doh::

They're Back!

Post by 9ball »

I was setting outside this morning taking photo's of pocket knives and I had this Stag one in my hand and when I looked up.......can you see it in the shadows right before the field?

We have a couple of Chestnut trees and they flock to it this time of year. We have seen them so thick in there you could not count them.
Could not be sure if it was SandBar or not.
The chestnuts are Chinese.
