Schrade sent knives and tools to Australia for many years.
Look at these Schrade boxes I have just found. Could anyone tell me what they were used for etc etc?
I have been told these boxes arrived in Australia, empty in a cardboard outer box.
Maybe they were give-a-ways for shop display.

Or were they shipped to Australia full of bulk knives or tools before 2004? … Ken

I know what I would use it for...

I thought I should carve a jack-o-lantern for Halloween, and got a little carried away. To make up for my lack of carving skill I added some screws and a hatchet head. A paring knife worked well for the initial cuts partially thru the shell and a Case toothpick worked wonders for finishing the cuts and making the curves. I needed a little saw to make the slot into the stem for the hatchet. You can tell I'm left-handed by the way the tools are laying, probably drives most of you crazy having the tools on the "wrong" side.

I think I'd be afraid to approach your house in the quest for candy with that Jack O' Lantern displayed. Still, I'll put up with a lot to get an Almond Joy.

With storms in the area, it made for some pretty cool light and shadow effects. This is out across the back forty. The second pic is looking more to the SE, the hills in the distance are in Arkansas. Bull Shoals Lake is in the valley between here and there.

Jerry, I think it's about as close as a person can get these days. Still quite a bit of land that's never been altered by humans. No cities, no traffic noises and on average within a 50 mile radius, i'd say the population is somewhere around one family for every 3000-5000 acres. Once in awhile, you feel the isolation. But on a whole, it's a pretty cool place to live.

I'm sure this has been done before and I just haven't seen it. A very handy neat and compact set-up for my Lansky Sharpening system.

Jerry, does that Lansky Sharpening System do a good job? I'm still trying to sharpen my EDCs, deer skinner and kitchen knives with whet rocks and steels. Tell us about that system if you will? Thanks Treefarmer

As a fella I worked for one time was fond of saying, yes and no.

BTW I have the diamond hones and recommend them.

The no part:
It doesn't work at all on very small blades like the coping blade on the Camillus 72's
there's not enough blade left sticking out for the hone to pass the top of the clamp
and you end up sharpening the clamp.

I haven't tried it because I use something else on kitchen knives (more on that later)
but I would think it wouldn't work very well on knives over 5 to 6 inches long. I could be
wrong. Saw one comment that said about 3-1/2" to 4" is the maximum reasonable blade
length

The yes part:
It works great on the wider blades and doesn't take a lot of time. End result is sharp
enough to suit me. If you're looking for KAI Shun kitchen knife sharp then no but if
you're satisfied with Kershaw Leek sharp, it will come very close.

Quick and gets kitchen knives and hunting knives plenty sharp enough to do the job. The medium grit belt gets them what they call 'tomato sharp'. The very fine belt will 'hone' the blade. It will never achieve KAI Shun kitchen knife sharp but will come close to Kershaw Leek sharp.

I have one they work great but like jerry said some blades it is a pain.....Great set up u have jerry

They're called Cushaw Squash. Folks down home just called 'em Crooked Neck Squash. In this day and age, most people this far north use them along with pumpkins and gourds for decoration.

We eat 'em. It's difficult to get them to grow to a decent size up here and it's always a hunt to even find one for our holiday meals. So far, so good.


Peeled, parboiled, baked with a little cinnamon and lots of sugar and butter... Mmmm Mmmm My mother always called it Candied Squash. They also make a great substitute for pumpkin in pumpkin pie. A slightly milder taste.

The bottom picture is of my kids down at my parents house when the kids were about six years old, so somewhere around 1980 or so.

Those are some bigguns Jerry! We had some around East Texas too, growing up in the 1970s.

Those are little fellers compared to what my dad used to grow. The ones mom used in the kitchen would come up to my knee. She liked 'em to be as much neck as she could get, because the meat in the neck is solid and easier to work. I'll have to cut up the bowl on these to get enough for a mess.

My uncle grew one, several years back, that weighed 76 pounds. They took it down to Druther's in Carmi (fast food joint he liked) and had a contest to see who could come closest to guessing the weight. He was pretty proud of that squash.


Trivia time:

"Druther's was a chain of fast food restaurants that began as Burger Queen restaurants (a defunct restaurant chain that was based in Louisville, Kentucky); it existed from 1963 through 1981. The name was a play on the word druthers, and their mascot was a giant female bee named Queenie Bee. In 1981, Burger Queen changed to Druther's restaurants, although the changes were mostly cosmetic. One reason given for the name change was to eliminate the perception that they were "just burgers", when they also had fried chicken and a serve-yourself salad bar. Nah, Wikipedia knows stuff. I know how to copy and paste. I knew there was a Druther's in Carmi but had no idea about any of that other stuff. I learned something new also.

It's history Perry. Not significant history like when the Revolutionary War started or what effect the cotton gin had on the economic future of the south but still, it's history.

I remember at least 2 prison inmates that filed lawsuits against the State of Texas for making pie out of Cushaw but calling it pumpkin pie. No, the inmates didn't win the suits...

Oh, those idiots don't have anything better to do with their time.

I like Cushaw pie better than pumpkin. To me, it has a milder taste. I just made one yesterday. There are two pieces left if anyone wants to come on my and try it before it's all gone. Better get here fast.

Candied or in a pie, it's all good.
