Old and Obscure Brands

Got this Romo knife from Roger Cunningham. Pretty cool old knife.

Someone I know had this obscure brand and I like to find out more information, I seen the spades was registered in 1727 is that mean when they started actually making with that stamp and I know it’s one of the oldest German Knife makers to exist starting in 1600’s but anyone know when that spades logo actually started and ended so I can get a date range?

According to Goins’ Encyclopedia they began using the Spade trademark about 1727. Due to WWI the trademarks were seized in 1919 by the U.S. Alien Property Custodian. They got them back in 1927. I doubt that helps narrow it down much. Looks like it was used for a looooong time.

Bar shield and using Works in the name does make me think it is that old. Works was used by Sheffield companies and a few early American companies such as Russell Green River Works.

Here is a 3 3/8" Sleeveboard pen knife with ivory handles The blades are stained but appear full and have smooth action, good snaps and no play.
Master tang is marked "Chalset/Canada" on the front and "702" on the back.
It looks to be a German made knife but is not marked Germany. The 1891 law requiring Country of Origin marking did not apply to imports into Canada.
However it does look 'old'.
Has anyone seen this marking before or have any info about "Chalset" ?

Very interesting, Roland. I did a quick search for Chalset Canada. A computer image search brings up quite a few of these. There is a fixed blade, which resembles a Marbles model (woodcraft?), on ebay right now. I also found a site where a couple of people asked Bernard Levine about Chalset knives. Levine called them a "Canadian importer", but said he could find no further information.

Clark23, a couple of nice obscure old knives. I really like the deep blade stamp on the Herder. It would be nice to see pictures of the whole knife, it looks old.
