Lovely forest. I'm surprised you have a grandson. I assumed you were a young buck. You must exude youthful vibes
I'd bet you get outside 1000 hours a year without even trying.
That's my Etsy store where I sell old knives and sometimes handmade knife accessories to support my knife habbit. Thanks for looking my friend.

The Shawnee Forest in S Illinois has some really nice areas, best accessed before Summer heat and humidity become oppressive. I don't get out as much since my Black Lab passed 2 years ago, but I still rack up quite a few hours on the trails......1000?

Some outdoor shots around the farm today, including lunch.
First black raspberries of the season, I probably ate a quart. My brother put up that little pool for the kids.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
I like the black raspberries much better than the red.
A yearly happening around here is the deer fawning inside your yard. Usually the doe jumps our 5' fence and calves in the center of the backyard. They do it to evade the coyotes . The mother comes early in the mornings and nurses the fawn as it will go between the fencing . The fawn returns after nursing inside the fencing.
It could have been an emergency or who knows what, as this year, the fawn is against the house in our ferns and outside the fence.
We live on a the hill overlooking the city proper.
The second fawn was last year's. It's picture was taken from the deck above as it laid at the end of a vegetable planter.
These bucks were grazing on downed shrubbery about daylight one morning a few years ago and could possibly be the fawn's father.
But it's not the last one for sure, he never made it out of the town proper.

wlf,
Interesting about the doe coming back to your yard again to have her young one! Our does normally give birth beginning in July and sometimes we see little ones in November with spots. Rut times are different in Florida than most states. The rut in south Florida begins in July and runs through all of February and some of March in the Panhandle.
Those 2 big boys in velvet are something we never see in the Florida Panhandle! They look like monsters to me. Know a couple of fellers that go up to West Virginia to deer hunt and they brag on the size of the deer up there.
I've seen the picture of Bambi getting speared by the fence several different times. Sad, do hope someone salvaged the meat.
Thanks for the chance to see your "baby".

Thanks guys.
I would never have suspected coyotes this close to town. Besides, I can see the interstate highway from the top of the hill here when the leaves are off and the city is just over the hill on the other side.
There's enough woodlands toward and south of the interstate to provide coverage , even though that area also has homes scattered throughout. We didn't have a deer in the area when I was a boy. It was along the time the Corp of Engineers dammed a steam for flood control that we started to see deer. I imagine they were brought in.

Lyle, around here (Dallas/Ft Worth) we have tons of coyotes, Bobcats a lots of wild hogs. And they live right in neighborhoods. Lots of garbage to get into and little dogs and cats to eat.wlf wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2024 1:43 pm Thanks guys.

I saw this and just wanted to drop this picture here. The redder colored sausage here are 60/40 venison pork sausage stuffed in lamb casing, a gift from my uncle. The knife was bought from the man himself, TripleF.
You have excellent taste in meat sir.

Thank you!
We eat a lot of venison here at Starvation Plantation in several ways.
Most sausage anymore is bulk as shown in the picture, it's a lot easier than stuffing and smoking. We did that before I retired when I wasn't so busy.
We make fry meat from the hams, 1/4 inch cross grain of separated muscles, backstraps are cut into 2 inch boneless chops, shoulders, neck and other trim is made into ground venison mixed with pork shoulder or Boston Butts. The prize from Bambi to us are the tenderloins wrapped in bacon broiled or grilled.
Several years ago we began saving the sirloin tip as a roast and cooking it as a pot roast with 'taters, onions, carrots, etc. Miss Joy makes a wonderful venison stew by browning a package of fry meat adding only potatoes, onions, salt and pepper. Occasionally we make summer sausage, usually give it to friends.
The Lord has blessed us to enjoy venison throughout our almost 57 years of wedded bliss.

Nice pics of the sausage making, TF!
My buddy and I shot in our sporting clays league Thursday evening, and later were back at my shop enjoying a cold one. My wife was letting the dogs out before putting them down for the night when she calls me and says there is a copperhead in the backyard. My buddy and I grab a shovel and fire poker and jog over to the house. We wound up with this fat little sucker. We skinned him - but we always lose a couple inches off the tail end of these copperheads as their skin is so thin.
My buddy had been gifted a cowboy hat earlier that day by another friend, so we will attempt to make him a hat band out of this copper fellow.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
One of my Facebook friends posted this pic - said he got 12 copperheads in an hour and 15 minutes. He lives across from the local golf course, a couple of miles from me. He rides a golf cart around the course at night to catch them (I think he works for the golf course). He said they have had a couple of golfers bitten recently.

Goodness, Mike! Y'all must be infested with Copperheads.
The one y'all skinned, will you turn it into a hat band, it'd way too short for a belt for anybody I know.
Cottonmouths and Eastern Diamondbacks are the bad ones we see. Every now and then someone mentions a copperhead.
