This is a little project I did for my dad last year for his birthday. He had given me this fire extinguisher years ago, and for the longest time it was sitting in my basement gathering cobwebs and corrosion. It was in such rough shape that I buffed it all out and cleaned it up. I know, I should have left the patina on there, but man, it was rough looking. I made the wall hanger for it. It is stamped 1968.



I was all pumped up when I gave it to him, but I don't think he remembered it. He called it a "unique gift". I was totally deflated, especially after all the time I had put into the rehab. If you have to explain all that went into it, it's not worth it. You either "get it" or you don't. A few months later I was down in his workshop and saw it stacked on top of a cabinet gathering cobwebs again. I was bummed out all over again.

Now, my father loves history, fine craftsmanship, and as an avid woodworker knows what can go into a project. He is always impressed with my projects and appreciative of anything I make him. I just don't think he connected with that object and it's memories the way I did.

I guess the important thing was what it meant to me.

Joe, your woodworking is very inspiring. I too often don't have the patience it takes to produce craftsmanship like that, so I like smaller, quick projects.

Here's a fun project I made a few years back for the wife. She loves otters, and I found this pattern in a magazine somewhere. It's a CD holder. The ball holds the CDs in place by gravity. I eventually replaced that crappy temp ball with a nice stone one I found on website.



I'm no Norm Abrams, but I can cut a straight line when I need to.

Glenn, I see now that you're in N.H. Were you bothered by the storms on Wednesday. I just about got my butt kicked in Mass. I left Westmorland about 3:30, headed for Connecticut, and went through Springfield aound 4:45 to 5:00. I never learned when the tornado touched down............ Quite the ride home........

Took some scrap to my local junkyard today. Visited with my old buddy Gene that runs it.

No, I'd love to have it and love even more to have a use for it. BUT, I need that like I need a side saddle. I told Gene I'd toss it out there and see if there was any interest. It's a nice old saw and a good buy IF you have a need for something like that.

All Gene can see it as is about 700lbs of cast iron scrap. LOL

He comes up with some of the strangest and neat old junk of any guy I've ever known. Sitting beside that saw are 2 HUGE old sewing machines. Newest patent date on them was 1897. Got no idea what they were used for but they looked like they'd sew a 2x4 with no problems. They may have been form the boot and shoe industry. They're BIG old honkers though. They'll get melted I suspect.

I'd have that hacksaw in about 5 minutes atthat price if I wasn't half way around the world. I love the old machines. I've been picking up what I can since I've been over here.Here's a few of my babies.


Has anyone got a set of drill press handles threaded 3/8-16. I'm using bolts right now, you can't get them over here.

Suggestion for the drill press handles. Drill a hole down the center of some closet rod or wooden dowel rod of a size that fits your hand (counter sink the bolt head end first) and glue them onto the bolts with some epoxy - or just make it a tight fit and press 'em on. Sand the corners to knock off the sharp edges.

Can you get wooden balls over there? That would work too.

It's hillbilly engineering but what the hey, it's all about - Innovate, adapt and overcome.

I'm really good at Hillbilly Engineering but avoid it if I can. If I had a lathe I would just turn a nice set of brass or stainless ones. I'll probably just drill out some plastic rod or something. The reddish orange thing is the frame for the 4" X24" diameter grindstone you see sitting on the floor to the bottom right in the one picture. It came out of one of the big hospitals in London. it was for sharpening their implements in the old days. It's a nice powered chain driven beast with a fine sandstone wheel and a nice slow speed for doing fine edges.

The knives are just an off shoot of collecting iron implements and simple machines. I may have some sort of accumulation disorder.

Here's a little piece I picked up yesterday antiqin with my wife. It's a 1948 toy Jukebox made by the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co. Most of these didn't survive because the plastic is very fragile and thin. The music box actually still works perfectly. I took the whole thing apart last night and cleaned, fixed some loose screws and good as new.
When you do find these, there tend to be cracks in the plastic or missing pieces of it somewhere. I payed 25 bucks and felt like I got a great deal for it to be workin still. It's about 6 in. tall and 2 in. wide. The musicbox was actually made in Switzerland, where they make all the fancy wooden ones.

Now that is a cool music box. I love it when something that fragile manages to survive in perfect shape. What a bargain!
