This knife is a Tekna. The Guard retracts into the handle when you press the red button on the end. It's great for when you need a knife and only have one hand available. Electrical techs love them.

Here is an unusual one. It was made in Italy and has advertising for Chevrolet. The unusual feature is the lid that opens up to reveal a secret compartment for I don`t know what. There is a residue of some substance that has dried up over the years. Anyone have any idea what was inside?

But, seriously, could it have been an inked address stamp?

Of course, I cannot explain why there is no ink on the opposing metal surface.

Or, maybe there was a rubber stamp mounted on the flat surface and an ink pad in the recessed portion. When closed, the stamp would contact the inked pad. Open it and it's a usable stamp. Maybe an address. Maybe a signature.

Well, since it has Chevrolet advertising, is it big enough for a spare key?
The residue may be left over glue that held foam so the key wouldn't rattle?
I have no idea really, just a guess.

That looks like the metal case they use for the round files used to clean the tips on gas cutting torches.

Thanks for all the replies. It is too small to hold an ignition key to a car. I doubt it was an ink stamp of any kind and Dale it does look similar to the tip cleaning tool for torches but again it is small and there was never any place for the rods to hang.

Any other guesses? ::hmm:: ::hmm::

Could it be a match safe?

What are the dimensions, MB?

It doesn't explain the residue, although it could have been lined to keep it from rattling.
It isn't a pipe tool but it still could have been used as one.

Well, if all else fails, I'm going with the hashish theory too. ::paranoid::

2"long x 1/2" wide

I scraped some stuff off and placed it in a glass of water to see if it would dissolve.

Nothing, definitely not water soluble.

Next I tried burning it as Donald suggested, it does burn and gives off a toxic plastic compound type smell.

Maybe it is some kind of ink stamp pad as Charlie suggested ::shrug::

Keep the ideas comin` fellas ::tu::

Not as unique as some of the others shown here, but I figured maybe someone could give me an idea as to the use of this one. It's a Hammer Brand circa: 1945 - 55 tang stamp. No patent dates on either blade, and the secondary key is stamped "key to service". I wonder if it wasn't a demo of some sort.

Sorry bout the cruddy picture, I'll try again in the morning outside.

Hey Mark,
Check about half way down page 4 of this topic:
http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kni ... ey#p181467

See Miller Bro’s post on his key knife.
I seem to remember Imperial made some of those that were given out with the new cars, GM products as I recall.
Someone feel free to correct me if you have better info on these.

Thanks Dale, I knew if I skipped a few pages before I posted, it would bit me in the arse. ::dang::

The Dealership angle seems to make sense, after seeing Miller Bro's key. (marked GM) I think they were used in the dealership themselves, as those keys are single sided, not automobile type keys. Maybe mine was for the "Service Dept" ?

These are kinda neat, I might have to try finding more of them !

They were used to open the door locks and glove compartment, cut to match the lock on your car ::nod::

What year did they switch to the double sided keys we know now ? I know I had a 67' Mustang with the old style single cut key. Just wondering..... ::hmm::

Mopar switched to double sided keys in 1991 and 1992 - single before that.
GM used thier 2 key single sided system into the very late 80's and 1991 I think.
Ford had double sided keys way back in the mid to late 70's, not sure on how many models.

:)

I have that same knife thats still a 'blank' and can be cut to most GM cars/trucks before about 85.

Every one I have seen had a GM key. They are from the "consolidated GM era" when GMC, Chevy, Cadillac, and BOP was under General Motors. GM went to the "platform build" in the 80's and all the key blanks were the same.

MB is correct in that they were cut to match the door/glove box keys. In doing so, you could un-lock the glove box without having to turn the ignition off to use the key. Also, have you ever locked yourself out of your car?!!! That key would come in pretty handy!

It would be simple to swap the key out for just about any key used today. That's been on my "to do list" for quite a while now. ::nod::

This 2.5 inch little cylindrical shaped knife does`nt have any tang stamp but it sure has good snap. Don`t think Ive ever seen another quite like it. Pretty cracked ice too.
