Stacked Leather Handles.......How To Best Preserve Them????

I have a few fixed blade knives with stacked leather handles. None of them are users, they live in my safe most of the time. My question is this; I've notice over time the leather seems to be getting a bit dry. I'm wondering what is the best way to preserve the leather in as pristine a condition as possible? I don't want to mess the color up or use anything that might trigger any rust, as a couple of these (Case) knives are about 40 years old and still in MINT condition. Any suggestions?

neets foot oil, mink oil, probably any good leather preservator including mineral oil. use only enough to soak in and repeat if necessary.

In the auto restoration business, a lot of folks use a product called Lexol Leather Conditioner on old Jags, Porsches, etc to restore the leather seats. Would probably work pretty good on a knife handle as well.

There is also a product called Connolly Hide Care Leather Conditioner (used to be called Hide Food), which is supposed to be good stuff.

I collect a lot of really old fixed blades, and have found that Neatsfoot Oil does an excellent job. Just fill a water glass so that the entire handle can be immersed, and leave it alone for a couple of days. Then take it out of the solution and let it air/drip dry for another couple of days. It restores the color to old leather, and gives it a new and softer texture. On Mint knives, I don't know if I would do this tho', as light colored leathers tend to end up darker. Fiebing's makes a good product, and I get mine a local saddle shop. Jim

I'd reccomend paste wax, neatsfoot oil will darken the leather over time

I have had pretty good luck with this product. Built on a carnuba base with no colorants. Seems to clean, soften and polish okay. Just google the name.
