A LITTLE IRONY
We have discussed celluloid and its diseases at great length here. I had something happen that would be a good joke on me if one has a suitably black sense of humor. I do what is recommended to keep my celluloid knives 'clean.' The other day I was looking them over to take some photos and here were two very nice knives that each had a nasty black scaly blob of rust on an otherwise mint knife. It had nothing to do with outgassing. A mouse had gotten in there (there was some other indisputable evidence) and peed on those two blades, where they then sat unattended for a few months.

My goodness Tongueriver, how frustrating. Another reason to not like those pesky little critters. Wow, first time I've ever heard of that.

Don't feel bad Cal, I had the same thing happen to me. Had a bid ol mint Case xx butcher knife siting on a shelf one one of my knife cabinets. I walked by and seen a big black blob right were it was etched Case xx. I picked it up not knowing what the cause was. I wiped it with my hand and could not figure out what it was. Then I said that smells like piss. (*%$(^( Mice! I put out some nice candy for them if you know what I mean and nixed that problem.

Aw, free pets!
As a matter of fact I have two, boys, born in captivity to field mouse mothers that I caught in the live trap at work.
Sorry about your knives though!

Cal - Sounds like those mice had it in for you
... How did they know to let loose on the blades
... We have our fair share of mice living in a heavily wooded environment - those little suckers can squeeze their bodies into the width of a quarter if they want to get through a small crack - one chewed the handle of my leaf blower
... so I know the feeling... Good thing the hawks and owls eat them
...

We have an occasional mouse get into the house and for a time when my son was occupying the basement they would feed on dog food he left out for his puppy. When he discovered this he started trapping them and caught quite a few.
After he moved out we only had one or two to contend with and the combination of peanut butter laced traps and ultrasonic devices had all but eliminated the problem.

I feel your pain. Not that I’ve had this happen to a knife, thank the Lord, but they infested my shop last winter. I’ve been cleaning up the mess for a while now. I hate the things. But living in the country with stock feed in the barn and shop we have a bunch.
In the shop I too have started putting out “candy” and I hope they eat their fill. In the barn a nice black snake has move in. We’ve even named him and I hope he stays a long time.

Grrrrrrrrr! I know the feeling boys! They are dads No.1 enemy on the farm. They get into the cabs of his tractors and combine, big mess. Park the airseeder tank for the winter, spring time comes and boom! They fill all the hoses with their crap. Luckily we have really good cats out here. Even the toms are super mousers.

We had one several years ago that just wouldn't be caught and wouldn't be poisoned. Finally I mixed powdered Portland cement with powdered sugar in a jar lid and he had a snack. That was the end of him. His little insides turned to concrete. Talk about constipation!

Cal, what was the mix on that, cement to sugar? 50/50? 25/75? 10/90? Sounds like that should work real well. All God's creatures love sugar.tongueriver wrote:We had one several years ago that just wouldn't be caught and wouldn't be poisoned.
