My best ever pistol shot. Back in the day I took great pride in my rifle skills. However, during my entire life I never once had anything to boast about concerning handguns. I was at best mediocre; I could always qualify, but that was it. Also, I never even used a pistol outside a range.

A couple of days ago I made a shot that objectively may not have been very impressive, but has provided me with a sense of satisfaction. Sort of a bucket list type of thing. The target was a ground hog; distance a hair over 60 yards. For once in his life the beastie remained still for me.
Using a S&W Model 14 Target Master with 6 inch barrel in .38 special, I took him with a shoulder shot. I had been aiming for the head thinking I would either get a clean kill or a complete miss. He jumped high, spun around, took some running steps and collapsed. I used the isocoles stance. Photo of the revolver at bottom of frame.

Hitting anything the size of a groundhog with a revolver at 60yds is impressive.

As an aside, I don't recall when, in my military training, I qualified with the Mod 1911 .45 cal pistol, but I amazed myself, as well as the instructors. I don't think I had ever fired a handgun except for a Colt Frontier model in .22 caliber. I still have no idea what happened.

Several years after I came home from RVN, I met some friends at a gravel pit to "shoot". I had an small .380 at the time. I was mediocre, at best, with it.

We were shooting at aluminum drink cans.

A friend handed me his brand new S&W 9mm and threw a 7UP can as far as he could out in front of us. I started firing and every time I fired, the can jumped up in the air and as soon as it landed, I fired again. I think I fired 14 rounds and hit the can twelve times and each time, it was farther away.

I don't know how many of the rounds hit the can and how many actually went just beneath it.

When the pistol emptied, I handed it back to its owner and said, "Nice" and walked away.

Trust me on this, I did not have then, nor do I have now, any illusions as to my prowess with a handgun. It had to have been a total fluke. I was so sure of that at the time that I declined firing the Smith or my own .380 again.

Anytime you can leave an impression on someone, don't mess it up by trying to do it again.

Charlie, I don't believe 12 out of 14 hits can be called a fluke. My single shot was a fluke: perfect lighting, no wind. In the Army most of my training with the .45 was spent assembling and disassembling against the clock. Actual shooting was little more than familiarization. And we only fired one handed. [Which is a good skill to have of course but we, or I, never developed much skill.]

I think little pistols are just hard to shoot well, I have a heck of a time looking like I can hit anything with a snub nose or little 380.

Paul Thomas, I cringe when I see a gun retailer suggesting a snubby to a new shooter. The smaller the firearm the more difficult to shoot. Most any highly experienced gunner/writer will emphasize this. So your experience is almost universal. My snubbies are for in-house, room size distances.

I've been eyeing the Glock 43 (9mm) but not locked in on it yet. By the way, if you are going to spend your knife money on something other than knives then guns make good sense to me! OH

Some of you know, over the past few years, German K98 Mausers have pretty much dried up and the price is skyrocketing. You can still find Czech and Yugo Mausers, but a war era German is tough. Today, Sheri and I went to the Pensacola gun show and I joked with her that perhaps I'd find a German Mauser I couldn't live without. I've been hunting one within budget for a couple of years. So I look around and find this one, it's a 1942 BNZ made Russian capture with the Nazi emblems peened off, which is great with me. I just couldn't live without it!!! Another wonderful piece of history added to my pile!

Yehuda congrats on the Mauser acquisition. About military rifles, some writer made what I thought was an interesting observation. He wrote that of the WWI era rifles, the Mauser was the best hunting rifle, the Springfield the best target rifle, and the Lee-Enfield the best combat rifle.

Hopefully someday I can get a Springfield. They're pricier than a proper K98. I have an Enfield .303 but haven't fired it.

Good luck on your hunt! If you only want a Mauser and don't mind it lacking history, the Yugo M48 is superior to the K98 and is obtainable in unused mint condition for around $800.
