What is Your Latest Old Schrade?

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

I actually lucked up today and found this knife in Dead Mint condition! I can not find anything on this knife with the bone handles, only find the old delrin ones!

That's a fantastic find! It has been buffed however, originally the clip blade had a crocus finish, the other blades were glazed. You can also tell it's been buffed since its so shiny and brand new looking, the 881 was last made with bone handles probably around 1959 or 1960. Yours probably dates roughly around mid to late 50's. It's a very nice knife and my favorite schrade pattern. Do you have any more pictures?

That sure does favor a Herman Williams rehandle. ::tu::

Greg that's just what I was beginning to think. I believe the blade is correct for that timeframe and that type of bone, the match strike waldens with the red wavy jig bone were after the long pull such as this one, I don't know exactly when that change occurred.

I'm at work now but will take more pictures of it later in the day light, you guys think it was rehandled? I've seen lots of schrades with this same bone especially the 294 pattern

If it was rehandled it was only done by Herman Williams, he has the old schrade jigging machine that schrade employees taught him to use and he makes it very, very close to original schrade peachseed bone. It's not an absolute certainty, but with more pictures we'll be able to tell for sure.

And here is a Cattaraugus, schrade made one identical to this but this lock was patented by catt so I'm guessing cattaraugus made these first!

Thanks for the pics, that sure is a beautiful knife. Now I'm NOT an authority on this, but I'm quite certain Herman Williams polished and rehandled that knife. It has the same traits of other knives he's done, the dye color, the mirror luster. It really is a nice piece.

I could be wrong about the handles, but it has definitely been polished. Don't take my word for it until some other people chime in.

I wouldn't worry too much about that if in fact it is a HW rehandle as he had a very long certified relationship with Schrade.

And considering a rare schrade with full blades + professional rehandle that price is not bad.

Harold I don't think he marks every single piece. Most of the bone rehandles he sells on ebay are not marked. I'm not 100% sure though. Where's Cal when ya need him?

I disagree about Chevy's stockman; buffed, yes, but the handles are original. I have some Schrade-Walden made Craftsman with bone handles that look just like Chevy's.

Roger, thanks for posting your supportive opinion. I bet chevy is feeling a bit better now about his vintage Schrade.

Paul, for sure, you did score an excellent 2OT. Ten months to go, but it might be your 2017: "Best Buy"/"Greatest Score", or at least up there in the top group if your honed hunting skills bring you more.
