Thought I'd come to the pros. Am a court reporter and witness said he had an 18" baleen tied to his back. Is this a type of knife. Researched it and only found baleen whales, and things made of whale teeth.
Any assistance is really appreciated!

I am certainly not an expert, looked at my dictionary, it says baleen is another name for a whalebone whale(a type of whale). They have a two to twenty foot ridge of spiny substance instead of teeth. Could'nt a knife
made of this substance be a baleen knife?????

Just in case,
Here is a knife made with baleen scales. I do believe you could make a knife out of baleen...much like a piece of jawbone might work. This is just in case the person was talking about handle material only. It isn't always black...it depends upon the whale species.

Bill, thank you for your input and the pics. I appreciate you sharing your knowlege! As a court reporter we write phonetically, and that's what it sounded like, baleen. So with the help of this site, I'm going to go with it.
Also, I'm going to see if there's a pic in evidence to see what it looks like
