My knife project

Post by celticastronomer »

Here is a knife I made in work. I got all the material for nothing. I was wondering if I could make a knife so by the time I got done, I ended up buying about $100 worth of files. It has ebony for the scales. I used some scrap aluminum for the guard. I"m not sure about the blade steel though. I do know it's used on one of our machines and it is heat treated.
The only thing I did buy was the handle rivets. I got them from Jantz. If anyone thinks it stinks, fell free to say so. It's my first so I'm open to any kind of criticism.

Looks pretty darn good. Save the files if you bought Nicholson, they make great knives if you turn the file into a knife, 1095 steel.

Thanks guys,
I can't explain in steps how I did it, I just started filing and kept going until I found what I liked. It wasn't easy and sometimes I felt like giving up. I think the real fine finish work needs some more attention but I'm happy just to get a shape out of that hunk of steel. Oh, since it was already hardened, that made it more difficult. I got some books since I started it and got some good ideas about making another. :D

Check out Wayne Goddard's book; "$50 Knife Shop" it is pretty good and you don't have to spend a bunch of money to get what you need to make a knife.
