HI!

I read this with must delight but was hesitant to respond in hopes that others might want to pick up the ball and run with it. This subject is actually a tough one. I have read numerous books and each has a slightly different take on the grading question. If you look at the NKCA guide lines they are a great help as are Bryans as mentioned previously. The biggest question we hear is what is mint. To me and many others it is dead factory condition with NOTHING wrong or altered or strached etc. Anything less than that is typically worth 50% less than mint. Now comes the hard part. What about near mint etc. OK, you now have trust your knowledge and desire of the knife. Are you willing to buy this knife with a spot on the bolster for 90% of the mint value????? At times I answer YES, sometimes NO. It is up to you. Remember that the values listed in books and such are typically high to begin with. Rarely if you sell a mint TESTED XX will you get the full book value, unless it is a rare piece. How often have you seen an ad that tells of the book value of $XXXX but they are selling at $yyyy which is $AAA below book. If they thought that it would get X they would sell it for that. You all know this. The tough one now is the used knife. I have learned that handle condition plays a bigger role in value than blade condtion. I love a used knife, but hate broken handles. This is me though. I will give an example. I had a CASE XX toothpick with bone handles. I beleive the book was $225 mint. Blade was well worn, didn't walk and talk well. Very small piece out of the handle. Still an nice example though. Sold on Ebay for $45. I felt that this was a fair price. Ron Richies book on knives has a great list of how to evaluate too. As you can see, I am telling you that a lot of it is personal opinion. IT is not exact. I might feel differently than you, but in general I look at the handles first, bolsters, walk and talk, blades last. but that is just me. I guess I didin't do exactly what your asking for but the real answer is that you need to look at lots of knives and see how they are sold. I look at all of the on-line sales and laugh at some of the starting prices, EBAY, and some of the other sales many times are fairly accurate. JMO. I would entertain any questions you might have. Final thought, photos are GREAT, but hands on is even better.

GRADING THE 6308:
IN MY OPION THE ONLY THING THAT KEEPS THIS KNIFE FROM BEING NEAR MINT IS A SMALL NICK IN END OF SMALL PEN, IT CAN SEEN FROM BACK SIDE ONLY, THE BLADE COULD PROBABLY BE RETIPPED AND NEVER KNOWN BUT I JUST DONT WORK LIKE THAT. SO IF EACH CATEGORY WERE NUMBERED FROM A LOW OF 1 TO A HIGH OF 5 I WOULD GRADE IT AN EXCELLENT/5. IN A PERFECT WORLD ABOUT 50 BUCKS.

In this post, I'm going to assess the 6308...

For comparison's sake, I've attached a picture of a pre-dot 6308 that I own that's very close to mint in my opinion. Comparing the blades shows that the master blade on Mossdancer's knife has been well used. Looks like around 10% blade wear to me. The short clip blade on the left side looks a lot more worn. my guess close to 25%. The pen blade looks like it is still pretty full. I can't tell for sure, but there appears to be a little tarnish / patina and scratches. I'm going to assume that's the case. The handle looks like it's in real good shape. The stamp is very nice. Deep and clean. Taking this info into consideration, I would call it a very good example of NKCA's description of excellent. I think it is a well used knife, but appears to be very solid. I assume it snaps open and shut nicely. I would pay a little more for this one than a lot of other excellent condition knives for many of the reasons that pa stated. I prefer handle condition over blade condition. The stamp is also very important to me. The blades / springs etc are this knife's biggest problems IMO... Stamp and handle still look pretty good.

All this is only my opinion...

Just participating in the grading part of the exercise here...
In my opinion, any blade that has been sharpened enough, or in such a manner, that the choil is gone, has more than 10% blade wear.

Grading a knife is certainly a very difficult part of our hobby/obsession. This exercise is an excellent idea.

BILL:
I AGREE WITH YOUR CHOIL CONCLUSION.
NOW, I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS.
1. FOR WHAT PURPOSE IS A CHOIL PUT INTO A BLADE, I HONESTLY DONT KNOW, I DO BELIEVE THE ANSWER TO THIS MAY CLEAR UP A LOT OF UNANSWERED QUESTIONS IN MY MIND.
2. WHY WHEN YOU LAY A STRAIGHT EDGE ON( IM TALKING LARGE CLIP )
DO BOTH BRIANS AND SUBJECT KNIFE MEET AT APPROXIMATELY SAME PLACE ON TANGS.
THANKS FOR YOUR OR ANYONE ELSES HELP WITH THESE POSERS.

Bryan's example still clearly shows the unaltered choil (small semi-circle after the kick, but before the cutting edge) intact. The other knife has been sharpened through the choil, into the tang/kick area. If you lay the blade on a stone of any kind, the front edge of the choil (closest to the cutting edge) should line up with the edge of the stone...so you never disfigure the kick or tang area. It looks like the kick on the master (clip) blade may be slightly altered (?). Enough of that and the blade could sit too low in the handle when closed. I'm aware that sometimes you might file the kick for a reason...but that's a whole 'nother discussion. (AND, my fingers are getting tired... ).Some folks even refer to it as a "sharpening choil". Oh, eventually the front of the choil will disappear after much sharpening, but it should aid in maintaining the blade shape, if done carefully. It also gives us a reference as to how much blade loss has occured from sharpening...more than 10%, in my opinion.

Did that help with question #2? I'm a little slow and I'm not sure I understand the second question...as in my eyes, the blades and actual cutting edge don't match up at the tang/kick area...since the choil is gone on the knife that you posted. :(

Bill

Edited for clarity...I hope.

AGAIN I AGREE WITH YOUR CONTENTION OF WEAR. YOU ANSWERED MY QUESTION ABOUT REASON FOR A CHOIL, AS I UNDERSTOOD YOU TO SAY FOR PROTECTION FOR THE TANG AND KICK DURING SHARPENING.

#2 I THINK YOU DID NOT SEE WHAT I SEE, IN MY CONVOLUTED THINKING I DRAW A STRAIGHT LINE DOWN THE BLADES FLATEST POINT TO WHERE THE BLADE JOINS THE TANG AND THAT LINE CROSSES THE FRONT EDGE OF THE C IN CASE. I AM NOT TRYING TO ARGUE, I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND WHY.
ANY HOW THANKS.

OK then,

I think I see what you are referrring to...

And I do see a difference in placement of the nail nick, as well, as it is forward of the clip, compared to Bryan's. Not sure your photo is of a correct knife?? I do see a difference...not sure what to make of it??? Maybe not the real deal?

Mossdancer,

Upon Further Review:

I've been looking at a LOT of pictures of Case clip blades. I've found some with a less pronounced choil than Bryan's example...and some that have the nail nick placed in a similar fashion to your example. So, I'm going to publicly "Back Off" of any speculation that your example isn't correct, or has had a blade replacement...as I am not a Case collector and it may just be the difference in timeframes, and/or changes in the clip blade, that exists between the two knives.

My original opinion was about percentage of blade loss due to sharpening...I'm sticking with my feeling that it is more than 10%...pronounced choil or not, as I see nothing left in that area. But, I wouldn't feel right if I infuenced you in any way about the knife has a whole, as this is merely an EXERCISE in knife collecting...and I was merely speculating.

I guess that means I don't know the answer to your second question. :(

I THINK MAYBE IN YOUR LAST REPLY YOU HAVE GIVEN ME MORE FOOD FOR FODDER.IT SEEMS THAT YOU SUGGESTED AN OLD KABAR OR AN OLD CASE OR ETC WOULD BE MORE ACCURATELY GRADED BY SOMEONE WHO COLLECTED THAT PARTICULAR BRAND.DOES ANYONE HAVE A 75 6308 THEY CAN PICTURE.
I HAVE ANOTHER GENERIC QUESTION. WHEN REFERRING TO 10 OR 25% WEAR, HOW DO YOU CALCULATE, TO THE POINT THE METAL IS GONE OR TO APPROX, HALFWAY WHERE THE BLADE HAS LOST ITS USEFULNESS. IF YOU OR ANYONE CAN ANSWER THIS, I THINK IT WOULD BE HELPFUL.

For me I guess it's a combination of missing metal and changing blade shape.
The master blade on your example may not be much more than 10% down...but the NKCA terminology is "up to 10%" before it begins to fall/drop down a notch/grade. I feel that blade may be missing some belly...like it was sharpened straight across a stone, rather than in a circular move to retain the shape. Again, JMO here.

The smaller clip is now misshapen, (maybe for the same reason?), and with a "nick" as you describe it, or altered tip, it is way more than 10% down.
Since the two blades reside in the same handle, I couldn't call the knife less than 10% down...even though the rest of the knife looks good.

pa has posted here and other places, some knives from a particular eBay seller who obviously knows/feels that the scales/handles are what attracts buyers to his knives...because they always look good on his knives...even if the blades look like $#!|, or have been "Kentuckyized", er, I mean, professionally cleaned.

Maybe it's just easier to clean the scales as well? Whatever.

Come on everybody, take the plunge here, and let's hear some other comments. Mossdancer and I are tired from "Exercising".
