Re: The All Scout Knives Thread
Jerry,
I'm sorry that you received such a poorly made knife from them. I have the 2009 and 2010 models and the fit and finish on the knives are as well done as any Case I own. If I have any complaint it would be the springs in the 2010 model are a bit stiff. Overall I'm very pleased with both and the fact they are made on the original era tooling enhances their appeal to me.

Re: The All Scout Knives Thread
Well this is not exactly a scout knife, but it started out as a scout pattern, but not an official Scout Knife.
I have always liked the carbon steel Imperial used in all their knives, from the shell handles to the higher end knives. This knife started as a solid bolster Imperial scout or camper pattern. I don't need the can opener or the cap lifter nor the shrinking black composite scales.
It was just a quick job to see how hard it was to do and make me a light weight 2 blade EDC.
Eventually I have to replace one of the scaled because I got in a hurry and cracked it.
It sure takes a nice edge ans holds it well.

Nice job Dale. You've invented a new pattern, the "Half Scout". I like it. When do you go into production?

Tank, I don't know what to tell you. Why did I receive such a poorly made example? You saw the pictures. Did I buy something different than what you got?tank wrote:Jerry,

That is a great transformation Dale. That old steel takes a fine edge doesn't it?
Jerry - Yes they are the same knives. I think it is pretty much as everyone says, Bear's quality is hit or miss. Maybe the ones I have are the exceptions. I don't blame you for being upset, I would have sent them back immediately.

I was going to but I bought the knife through a third party and by the time I made up my mind, their three day return window had come and gone. Oh, well. Life sucks and they ya die.tank wrote:That is a great transformation Dale. That old steel takes a fine edge doesn't it?

You might try contacting Remington http://www.remington.com/pages/our-comp ... -info.aspx or Bear http://www.bearandsoncutlery.com/index. ... ef=Contact and demand quality. The worse thing that could happen is they say 'No.'

I think maybe Remington. Their name is on the knife. Thanks Tank, I think I'll do that tomorrow. (Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow and being retired, that's just about everything.

Re: The All Scout Knives Thread
Jerry, contact Bear & Son about your knife. You can E-mail or call them on the phone. Describe every problem the knife has so it can be addressed and fixed. I'm pretty sure that they will fix any problems it has or that you are not satisfied with. Their lower end knives aren't going to be the best fit & finish but that Boy Scout knife should be a lot better than their lower end knives. I've always gotten really good customer service from Ken at Bear & Son. I think he will do the same for you. I've sent them older knives that were made before the current owners of Bear & Son owned it and they jumped on my knives and fixed them in a jiffy just like I had bought them the day before I contacted them. Let us know how things turn out if you don't mind.

Re: The All Scout Knives Thread
I called Bear & Sons this morning and when I explained why I was calling, the young lady who answered the phone said yes, Bear had made the knife and she could help me. I told her about my dissatisfaction with the quality of the knife and she said since Remington's name is on the knife, I should call them.
That didn't make any sense to me but...
I hung up with Bear and called Remington to be told that Bear made the knife and I should call them. I politely expressed my displeasure with the situation, explained I felt like I was getting the run around and was told that I could send the knife to Remington but they would just turn around and send it to Bear so in the interest of time, I would be better served by cutting out the middle man and dealing directly with Bear.
That did make sense to me, so...
I called Bear back and got a different person on the line. I explained my dilemma to the best of my ability and she transferred me to Ken. Ken was polite but gave me the impression he took offense that I don't find the knife a quality product. I told him the can opener looks like it was stamped out of sheet metal and I think that pissed him off (sometimes, I can piss people off just by breathing). When I told him I'm acquainted with an individual who owns both the 2010 and an original, who said they do not compare, he became huffy with me and told me "they are exactly the same, made with the same exact tooling as the originals to the exact same specs". He told me that when he's in the shop/factory, he inspects just about every knife that goes out the door. Okee Dokee then. The offer was made and I'm taking him up on it to send it back and he will get rid of the sharp edges (the ones that are not supposed to be there) and do what he can to make the knife acceptable.
They can't re-manufacture the knife so I really can't ask for any more than what he's offered. He promised quick turnaround. I'll let y'all know the results.

Way to demand what you deserve, quality workmanship. If we can't expect and get quality from U.S. manufacturing, the knife industry is in real trouble.

I have a slightly later version of the original RS4233 (c.1929-1932) and have taken some pictures comparing the it with the reproduction model. The reproduction model says "c. 1924" on the box.

Re: The All Scout Knives Thread
There's a lot of difference in the caplifter/screwdriver blade on that knife posted above and the one on the reproduction model. The one above is a lot shorter and more stubby than the repro. It is more similar to the one on the knife I have...........

Re: The All Scout Knives Thread
I wasn`t going to get into this, but I have been asked too.
Shown below is a Remington scout knife from 1923. Before I start, they came with a one piece can opener and a two piece that year.
Here is a list of the differences that I see:
1. Swedge on the master blade is too short.
2. Tang stamp is different.
3. Nail pull is too deep and too wide.
4. The handles should have 3 pins, not 1.
5. The lift tab on the can opener is wrong, the original has the tab in the front, not on the top of the blade.
6. The original has a notch in the handle to accomodate the lift tab, the repro does not.
7. The original has Pinched and Grooved bolsters, the repro bolsters are flat and not even
symetrical
8. The bail is too long and does not have the fancy ribs near the pin, the repro is flat.
9. On the original the center liner is fancy filed, even on the inside.
10. On the rear side of the can opener it is stamped "Remington" in script. I don`t see it on
the repro.
11. The shield is the closest thing to the original, but even that is not an exact match.
12. The Punch blade on the original is gun blued in the groove.
13. The repro is too wide and bulky.
14. Bottle opener/screwdriver blade is shorter on the original.
15. The jigging pattern on the bone handles is not a match to the originals.
16. The original had Carbon steel blades, the repro looks like Stainless steel
Did I miss anything? My point in all this is, if you are going to call a knife an Exact reproduction, at least get most of it correct.
Please tell me what original tooling was used on the repro, I don`t see it. I have never held a repro in my hand, but from what I see in the pictures Phil posted there is quite a bit wrong with these knives.

I like long pulls and blade swedge but the repro has too much of one and too little of the other. The 1 pin handles is a definate turn off for me. Maybe "original tooling" = some tooling from Camillus, D? I don't own either knife, original or repro, but Stevie Wonder could see they are not EXACTLY a like. Jerry, let us know how things come out if you don't mind. I'd like to know for my own personal satisfaction about Bear & Son's customer service. It sounds like they have did a 180 from the last time I delt with their customer service.

Re: The All Scout Knives Thread
Aimus, Remington made the original knife, they sold all their knife making equipment to PAL in 1940, it was then moved to Holyoke Mass., in 1953 the plant was closed and by all accounts the old knife making equipment was sold for scrap metal.Aimus Moses wrote:Maybe "original tooling" = some tooling from Camillus, D?
So where did Bear get any tooling as they claim??
Nothing on the Bear knife is made like the original. I think this original tooling claim was made to sell knives, otherwise I would like to see the proof.
Better yet Jerry, send a link to Bear of this threadAimus Moses wrote:Jerry, let us know how things come out if you don't mind. I'd like to know for my own personal satisfaction about Bear & Son's customer service.

The original tooling claim to sale knives doesn't sound far fetched to me D. Much worse things have been said and done in the knife business to "make the sale". That sounds like a good ideal to send Bear & Son a link to this thread. Don't know how to do it or I would. At the least it will let them know that people are paying attention to how they handle their customers.

Re: The All Scout Knives Thread
This is the first knife I ever owned, my personal Cub Scout folder. I received it as a Christmas gift in 1958.
As you might guess, I didn't know nuttin' about nuttin' in those days! The inside is caked with fuzz and dirt, and the screwdriver/can-opener combo blade is corroded tight into the handle.
For some reason I kept it all of these years...
