how much oil?

when cleaning a knife how much oil should be put on it 1 drop 5 drops i dont know. and should the oil be left on or wiped off. and could you explain how i should care for carbon steel and stainless steel. and when you put metal polish on is it before or after you put oil on? these probably sound like stupid questions but i just dont know the answers.

I like being the 1st reply as it opens you up to second guessing and more knowledgable responses but I've did this before so here goes. I think how much oil you put on the joints depends on the condition of the knife. I would always wipe the excess oil off of the knife after application and if I used a metal cleaner I would apply a light coat of oil after the cleaner. again I would wipe off any excess oil. I have talked top a lot of dealers who maintain 100's of knives, sometimes more, and that seems to be the general consensus.
