Re: Outdoorsman Thread
Dropped my first deer of the season using a vintage Model 94 Winchester chambered for the 32 WIN SPL. 144 yard shoulder shot, she dropped right on the woods lane (makes it easy to back the truck up and load em) load was a 170 grain Speer FP over IMR3031. Going to switch to the Ruger M77 270 WIN my wife gave me in 1978 for my next deer - moving to the big potato fields to hunt it. OH

Congratulations and a nice shot, Old Hunter! I have a M77 in 30-06, but mostly use my 270 Weatherby Vanguard. Harvested a lot of deer with the 270. Our TN muzzleloader season starts this Saturday.Old Hunter wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2024 11:14 am Dropped my first deer of the season using a vintage Model 94 Winchester chambered for the 32 WIN SPL. 144 yard shoulder shot, she dropped right on the woods lane (makes it easy to back the truck up and load em) load was a 170 grain Speer FP over IMR3031. Good job, Old Hunter! She'll eat good!
Every time I hear or read about a .32 Winchester Special, my thoughts go back to a different day, back when we would have correctly been called "young& foolish". We were invited to hunt on an adjoining ranch to Miss Joy's family ranch. It was a traditional deer hunt with hounds with several of us on horse back. A rainy afternoon and what a circus!
The dogs jumped a buck as a buckin' horse was about to unload one of the fellers from the ranch we were on. Shots were fired as the running buck made his way from the palmetto flat to a Cypress pond. For some reason my buddy and I were both using rifles that afternoon, probably the wide open flat woods caused us to make that choice.
The buck was running the outside rim of the Cypress pond, I got down off the old mare I was riding and took a crack at deer. At the shot the deer headed back out back across the palmetto flat. The buck had been hit but was still in high gear. My friend John had his .32 and was closing the gap on the deer. He pulled up to shoot and his horse pulled a stunt and tried to pitch him off. John whacked the horse between the ears to get his attention. That whack dented the magazine tube so much the old Winchester would only hold 3 rounds! The chase was resumed, we both closed in on the deer and as he ran passed the deer the old .32 rolled the deer up.
That was over 50 years ago, we were a different breed of redneck back then, the old .32 is still in my friends possession, he's crippled up with neuropathy, neither one of us has been on a horse in years. We both look at life a bit different than we did in the early 70s.
There's another tale about about me running over his old 12 gauge double barrel but we'll save that for another day.

Thank you. I love that old Ruger because it was a gift from my wife, because it was my first high power hunting rifle and because I still like the 270 Winchester round. Good luck with your muzzleloading hunts.Corn Creek Cutlery wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2024 11:35 amCongratulations and a nice shot, Old Hunter! After such a walk, 5-6 hours of crossing the river, I realize that during this time the internal monologue stops. My thoughts stop. The primary ones remain "I can't run over here", "damn it, I pushed myself into the rosebush", "I'm hungry", "Bite!!!"

Cool shot! I love sitting by the window while flying and spotting land features. In Winter, I like seeing ski resorts, which are usually pretty easy to spot.

When I saw him practically rubbing that little tree to death, I knew I needed to get it on video. Poor lighting, bad zoom, but I think you can appreciate his size and stature.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
Good morning folks . Here’s a brief of our last week of sitting and hoping for the “ big one “ . It’s been warmer than normal and we are seeing the whitetail deer in several counties around here being killed off by EHD . It’s a tiny mite that is blown up in the wind that kills deer. They are so small they’re referred to as “ no see ums” by many . Once we get a hard frost they are done for . We seen this in 2021 and it really affects the mature deer up here. It’s been around a long time it’s just that with the warmer weather lately we’re seeing there affects on the deer here’d more and more . If interested in more goggle EHD in deer. Wi,DNR has a lot of info on it as well .
Here’s a few pics of some young bucks hanging out tempting the heck out of us .
Enjoy you time outdoors !

Went quail hunting .... ended up with dove instead of Mr. Quail ....
I see TONS of quail all the time 'round here ...
when I am on the public hiking trails here... where you can't hunt them....
Looks like maybe roadrunner track and maybe buzzard tracks in the mud ...
I don't know, they sure was big'ens ...

Yesterday our gun deer season started here in Wi. And niece Laura dropped this Buck. Check out those brow tines! Talked to several different groups of hunters last night and it seems to be a bit quiet for some ,like not a single deer . A county or 2 over and all kinds of deer.
Have a great day out there ! Be safe if hunting or fishing or hiking or!
