What knives do you already have ?
My first thought that definitely went on every hike I ever went one , is Buck 110. But some think it’s too heavy. So maybe one of the new light weight 110’s.

As a very avid hiker I can reccomend a few things..Plenty of water and a GOOD water filter.. A GOOD rain suit.. First Aid kit.. Swiss Army knife.. Any meds you might need over night and if you wear glasses, a spare pair.. Change of socks.. A change of clothes depending on the legnth of your trip.. Some kind of snacks that you dont mind eating and has a good taste.. I carry a small folding saw and a pair of light weight work gloves..Some kinfd of fire starter.. I also carry a small bottle of hand sanitzer.. I carry a current epipen too..
There are a million lists out there with good suggestins and some are plain silly..

As John points out, there is no "one thing".

The only other items I would add at almost zero weight is a “space blanket” and a whistle .. one to keep you warm if needed and the other to alert rescuers of your location when needed

Toilet paper and drinking water. And make sure your vehicle will get you back home. Everything else comes after those three. Poison ivy just doesn't work for bathroom tissue. Happy camping!

Depends on what you consider “camping”.
Some good recommendations but as a veteran backpacker I don’t see a couple of things most people wouldn't think of as important. By backpacking I’m referring to where you are out several days, miles from the nearest road, hike on foot frequently to a different campsite, and carry everything with you. Tent, sleeping bag, cooking gear, food, etc. Everything you have is either in (or on) your pack or in your pockets. Two things you will appreciate greatly are a good sleeping pad and a lightweight folding chair. Laugh if you want but the right chair is well worth its weight, as is a good nights sleep.
And a buddy. Never hike into the backcountry alone.

Looknup the Boy Scout Ten Essentials. The lists will vary a bit by area and climate, but you'll recognize some commonalities. And the list is often longer than ten items.
Here are things I like to take, and all can easily fit into a day pack with room to spare.
A map of the area where you will be hiking.
A compass.
A Nalgene water bottle or two. I like the 1 qt size and usually carry 2 to 4 of them.
A knife.
A roll of 550 Paracord, at least 50 feet.
First aid kit.
Toilet paper.
A small shovel or trowel.
A human companion to go with you.
A bag of GORP.
A whistle.
A hat wth a brim.
Depending on time of year,
Sunscreen.
Poncho.
Jacket.

I like my Esee Izula 2 fixed blade strapped to one of my shoulder straps along with a leatherman tool in my pack. Other guys have pretty much covered the rest.
