Calvin can you explain how the above tool was used ?
Was it to check that the sheepsfoot blades were correct size & shape ?

Re: My latest Schrade
This pocket knife arrived recently in a large group or lot of pocket knives that I purchased. I did NOT purchase the group or lot of pocket knives to obtain this particular pocket knife. But, it did turn out to be a keeper. It is a SCHRADE, OLD TIMER, pattern 8OT, three blades, two springs, one tang stamp, 3 15/16" closed, "STOCKMAN" pattern or style, pocket knife. The main blade tang stamp says "SCHRADE - U.S.A. 8OT" The main blade rides a tiny bit high in the saddle. To me, that is NOT a problem. Other than that minor flaw, it is in EXCELLENT condition. It needed no cleaning. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

This pocket knife arrived recently in a large group or lot of pocket knives that I bought. I did NOT purchase the group or lot of pocket knives to obtain this particular pocket knife. But, after I cleaned off the tangs, I was quite surprised and pleased with the results and now, it most certainly is a keeper. It is a SCHRADE, two blades, two tang stamps, one spring, 3 7/32" closed, pocket knife. The main blade tang stamp reads "SCHRADE - CUT. CO. - WALDEN, N.Y." The secondary blade tang stamp reads "SCHRADE - CUT. CO. - WALDEN, N.Y." Overall, it is in VERY GOOD condition. The blades did need some cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

I have a couple of these that I got from Eric. They are to grind the nail nick into the blade. The plate holds the blade in place while grinding.kootenay joe wrote: ↑Sat Apr 09, 2022 11:12 pm Calvin can you explain how the above tool was used ?

It's actually a gauge, it isn't used for the grinding at all. It's used to check that the nail marks are stamped into the proper area of the blade. If you take that blade off the ring and rest it on the pins in the back of the gauge with the lower pin resting in the back square of the tang and the blade back resting against the other two pins, the nail mark should be perfectly centered in the little "window" with the flat of the nail mark perfectly even with the top edge of the "window". The gauge was also used to make sure the the blades themselves were stamped out of the strip steel correctly.
This one is a nail mark and tang stamp gauge:

I had to switch out my original pictures. I had a 61OT blade gauge up first but I didn't have the pins in the right spot against the blade in the photo LOL!

I have a brother-in-law who is a radical Alabama Football/Bear Bryant fan. He has a ton of memorabilia, and typically accumulates even more Roll Tide articles for Christmas and birthdays each year. I had this knife, and customized the box as a gift to him a few years ago. It has been one of his favorite pieces so far.
