Re: The Venerable Old Barlow
Very nice additions to the thread Knifeslinger, Tsarbomba, John and Steve! Lloyd, beautiful new batch of old barlows!
That Keen Kutter looks like it could possibly be an E.C. Simmons era one?

Beautiful barlows gentlemen!
Here is a Western Barlow 822 that just arrived today, very happy to add this one to the accumulation. Long pull, both bolsters stamped, clear tang stamp, full blades with no wobble, nice and snappy, and it was in rough shape cosmetically upon arrival, so I got it for a great price.
I know dating Westerns is a challenge, but am I correct in thinking this one is most like pre '73 since that is when they moved out of Boulder?

Re: The Venerable Old Barlow
Thanks Dave and David, I appreciate the encouragement.
I am glad you like the Ulster Dave.
I recently got an Ulster #11, the spear blade Barlow.
I need to find a #12 Sheepfoot Barlow so I can make a matched set of Ulster Barlows.

Nice Western Barlow and I think you are about right on the age. Enclosed is a catalog cut from 1972 showing your model without the bolster stamp. Yours might be a year or so earlier???313 Mike wrote:Beautiful barlows gentlemen!

I was going through my collection and found this Barlow made by the Enterprise Cutlery Co St Louis USA. Sold by Norvell-Shapleigh Hardware prior to 1915.

Clean up or as-is? Help me decide. I'm leaning towards as-is.

Colonial Ranger Ultra-Honed knife, advertised as w/ Ebony Handles. Free, because the Ebony turned out to be black plastic...also, was the dullest Ultra Honed knife I've seen. All around un-noteworthy knife

Tsar I would leave that one as is, it looks great. Put a mirror edge on that puppy and it will contrast very nicely with that patinaTsar Bomba wrote:Clean up or as-is? Help me decide. I'm leaning towards as-is.

It might be a little while before I sharpen that HS&B, KS, you can pretty much shave with the master as it is...
SteelMyHeart, I think you might find that those Colonials take a wicked edge without a whole lot of work on the stones. I've got a perfectly-placed, perfectly annoying cut on the tip of my thumb from my Colonial Master Barlow that I don't even recall getting...
Here's a Barlow dump from my new acquisitions:

Re: The Venerable Old Barlow
Drake Oil Well etch? I can't tell you how many of those '72 Queens I've missed out on. I lost out on a near-mint one for a ridiculously good price when I had technical difficulties trying to bid an ebay auction. The only one I've seen since is listed elsewhere by some joker who wants nearly $300 for it. They are beautiful knives but even a mint Queen Barlow isn't worth that kind of money to me.
