What makes a Whittler a Whittler?

I've heard of those single-main spring split backs with the wedge but have never seen one. Would be great if someone has one they could show us. I'm not doubting their existence- just haven't seen one myself. Maybe someone that has one will come along and post a picture.

I think the master on that Wyeth should be between the two smaller blades.

I'm not sure I have ever seen that arrangement before.

Dave you could be right .There is enough movement in the spey blade that the master blade will fit ever side.If you close the spey first it closes towards the awl (punch )and the master closes to the outside.

I remembered Grant is in Australia so just assumed maybe that's how Whittlers work down under! Grant, can you confirm?
The only thing different is we are upside down so we have to block owe noses to stop the wood chip getting in.

Wow, I've never seen a split-back with the wedge in it. You learn something new every day to mess up what you thought you knew. The only actual split-back whittler I've seen was made in the early 1800's as far as we could tell, and just had the split with no spacer. It wasn't cut to make the split so there was no space between the two legs of the split. from what I've heard, they were forged from two pieces and the double spring end wasn't fluxed (or what-ever they do to make then weld together) so the weld only happens on the main blade half. I'll try to post a picture of my split-back hawkbill. I've posted it on another thread but my camera won't allow a good close-up view. Dave

1830's split back hawkbill made the same as a split back whittler I've seen.

Grant, thanks for clarifying. I always wondered how that worked down under! Someday I'd like to make a trip there to see that.

djknife, that's awesome, thanks for posting it! I suspect it was somehow forged that way. Those old smiths knew a lot of tricks.

No, a true whittler is a standard three bladed pocketknife, with or without a split backspring.....

Found another split back over the weekend. Pretty rough condition. Case XX era 6308 whittler.
