Rough Riders!

Read back a couple of post and you'll see where Ken offered to send me something completely different from any traditional style, so I accepted his generous offer.
What he sent is a Rough Rider RR1110. It is a double barreled Canoe with beautiful smooth bone handles. The fit and finish is great, has an acorn shield with RR included. This joker is heavy, right at 7.5 oz., my Case 6275 I'm carrying today weighs about 3.75 oz. It's a real handful!
This is a very unusual pattern and I would assume there is no practical use for this pattern other than it being an anomaly. I would suggest not opening all the blades at once, as this thing might bite.

Thanks Ken, I'm probably now the only feller in Washington County that has a double barreled Canoe pocket knife! (The RR listing actually calls it a "Double take Canoe".)

It's hard to comprehend just what you get with these RR knives. IMHO they BEAT the Schrades all to heck. Same for the rest of the American brands that are sold that are made in China.

I'm not a hunter/gatherer type so I do not rely on a pocket knife BUT I will carry a new Camillus or Spydee ( no I won't, I lied ) to use at work.
I carry "Knife Lot" Beaters to work. I wind up with a pocket full of tiny screws, and a desk full of knives waiting for repair.

I am embarrassed by the American brands that are made in China. Not that they are bad (lied again) but they are not American knives no matter who says they are.
When I buy a Chinese knife I am proud of a good Chinese knife. Period.
These Rough Riders I keep for weekends. They are not tough but they are pretty, and they are what they say they are. Check out the 20 year old Rough Riders...

I think I paid 27.00 for three Muskrats so they are less than 10.. each.
I just opened the third box so I received 2 muskrats, and a canoe for less than any other NEW fit/finished knife that I own.
Actually you could use the bone, and throw the knife away for that price.

I have said this before... China has 29-40 thousand years as a society to get things right. The rest of us have "Dark Ages" that are what... 2,000 years?
Guess who has the advantage!@!! It's an old story that no one accepts.

Don't worry about the double Muskrat, Ken. This double barreled Canoe demonstrates quite well what an unusual and interesting knife feels like! It would be interesting to know who came up with this pattern and why? I believe it will be quite a conversation piece!

I just read the other night, and forgot where that the RR knives are made in the same factory as the new Schrades. Can anyone confirm this?

Well I've been carrying the RR Trapper for a couple of days, the one that was anonymously sent to me to use. I've not done much with it other than sharpen it where it would really cut. Did cut a few branches and leaves from some cold sensitive plants that we put in the greenhouse. I did sharpen a pencil with it and it did a wonderful job . I showed it to a guy at church last night during supper and he offered to trade me a Case 3318, boy that was tempting! I said no, since some one was kind enough to send a knife for me to actually use I couldn't do it with a good conscience. Trading a $10-12 knife for a $40 knife is always good business in my book.
Carrying a knife from "over there" almost makes me feel like a traitor. Maybe I should slide one of the old USA made Cases or Queens in my bibs just to offer some psychological comfort and support while I try out this Chinese trapper. Some how it just doesn't feel right.

I do believe the RR is a much better lookin' knife. Long lived? Only time will tell.

When I see a guy at work carrying one 5 gallon pail, I always tell them to grab two to even out the load so maybe carrying an American knife in the opposite pocket will even out your psyche.
Or... maybe two RR knives, and you'll start a new trend... Like the first tie dyed hippie?

Well boys, I'm taking momma to town in a few minutes and I noticed your comments. I'm going to have to leave RR at home and put my "Sunday go to meetin'' knife in my pocket. Got to thinkin' about what would happen if I was in a wreck and they had to say, "He was survived by a Chinese made pocket knife. A little Case Tony Bose Teardrop just for the ride to town and back. When I get back from town, I'll slip RR into my pocket.

The owner of Rough Rider is an American and must have at least a few Americans employed for distribution etc. i.e. Rough Rider is an American company that has their knives made in China, same as Spyderco, Columbia River Knife & Tool, etc.
Fight'n Rooster had a Double Muskrat pattern, made in Germany, late 1970's, so maybe it is a vintage German or British pattern.

I have "go to town" knifes. They are the ones I want to be known by IF lightning strikes or IF I have to depend on them.

In my most humble opinion... RR are not those knives BUT you can buy a 2 pound box of them, and donate them to your church group to give out to the kids, Scouts, or weekend whittlers group. Maybe a hundred bucks will cover 40 knives if you set it up.

Maybe a month later some one will come up to you, and say... "Where's your RR sir?"

I THINK Schrades that people still love (Made IN China) are made in the same facility but the RR is the main focus there.

Besides the tough time on the continent of origin, point out the working flaws compared to the new Schrades. I bet ya' they are dead even.
In fact I have a newer Winchester that I BET is made in the same facility. $5.00 to any charity says it is.

They took the time to line up the peanuts under, and above the knife.

It actually made me smile...

I have so many Rough Rider knives i need a pick-up to pack them around, yet i just bought 3 more. Why ? I think it is for the overall good feeling i get from handling a well made nicely finished knife. So i'm paying an average of just over $10 for each episode of feeling good. That's about the same price as a movie or A&W meal and in addition to the good feelings i also get something physical that is useful or could be traded or sold.
Yesterday i picked up 3 new RR knives, each one is winner, wonderful knives regardless of price.
4 1/4" Trapper with bone handles, peach seed like jigging with threaded bolsters & caps, almost reminiscent of early Schrade-Walden.
3 5/8" Tobacco Bone 'Double' Canoe. This is a heavy knife, like my GEC # 46 Toenail. What is so neat about this Double Canoe is that all 4 blades lie low when closed, so when gripping knife with one blade open it is comfortable (very !). There is no blade spine sticking into your hand.
Remarkably impressive knife.
3 5/8" Sowbelly, 'Silver Select' with pink bone handles and fancy bolsters and cigar band. An all round fine knife in beautiful pink.
I will post pictures sometime after dawn.
