Case Warranty Valid for Broken Spring?

Hello...
I've got a 087PE Stockman ('65-'69 vintage) that apparently has a broken spring. The main blade won't close completely. When opened, it feels like it's not under tension. I can't see any sign of a break from the outside but, something is clearly fouled up.
Anyone have experience with the Case warranty department for this kind of repair?
I welcome & appreciate all suggestions and insight!

Send it in. Seems like I only hear good things about the Case Warranty Center. Be sure to specifiy wether newer parts are acceptable to you in your note. I sent one knife in with a bad blade and they replaced it with a newer one and that was perfectly OK on that knife, it came back looking and operating as new.....no charge.

In my experience with Case repairs, a broken backspring is ALWAYS covered under warranty. Case will most likely replace the knife rather than replace the spring though, since most of their tooling has changed since that era. But for the 087 pattern I do not know that for a fact.

From what you have described though, it may be a worn out tang not a broken backspring. That would no be covered under warranty.

You may be right. The blades are full and unsharpened since the factory but, that doesn't preclude a worn-down tang. I'm really not sure. I suspect you are correct since the backspring is solid, showing no sign of being broken. It is, however, slightly more sunken than the backspring for the spey & pen blades (which have strong snap).

It would be a shame to relegate this one to a drawer; it's got nice, uncracked, dark Rogers redbone handles.

It's worth a shot... It's going out tomorrow!

If you want the knife back rather than a current stock replacement, wether they can fix it or not, you need to add a note and they will contact you. Put your phone # and e-mail address in the note as well.

Yes, backsprings are covered under the warranty. If tooling has changed on that model since yours was made, the factory will not have the old parts and will offer you a new knife like Knifeaholic said. If that's the case and you don't want the knife replaced, I may have the correct backspring.
