I`ve always thought the 2nd cut bone on these was some of the best from Case!

Thought I would bump this thread. The Case 72 clasp pattern is a favorite of mine and I have looked through this thread multiple times at the nice examples posted. Here are a few Tested XX 6172's. My belief is that the knife in the first picture is an unpolished example that has the original blade finish combined with 75+ years of patina. Although his 3 brothers are polished they don't seem to show any sharpening or blade loss. I don't see a lot of these knives and when I do they are usually in decent shape. Maybe they were too big to carry and use.

The men that made these knives did not need ISO 9000, Lean Six Sigma, or any of the other Quality Assurance frameworks used today to "instill quality" because they had something even better - pride in their work.

Those are awsome! I agree that there is good old american quality in every one of those knives!! I'm going to contribute my 3rd model usa bulldog to this already awsome bunch of knives that have been shown so far!

Ralph - thank you for reviving this thread! This is one of the topics I never looked at before this week. Great knives posted by all. Every one seems to have very nice bone or stag.

Nice etches too. That 150th anniversary knife that TheClasp posted back in 2012 certainly has one of the best etches that I have seen!

HAKD, beautiful examples and nice variety in your group of Tested Clasp knives. I am curious to know if the green bone example is marked with "XX 6172" or maybe even "XX 6272" on the back of the blade tang? The examples I have seen with the big jigs often have a pattern number stamp. It is my (unverified) opinion that the large jigging style indicates an earlier knife (closer to 1920 than 1940).

None of them have any marks on the back tang.
I thought the older versions had one pin rather than two pins on the scales??

That's true HAKD the ones with fewer pins are earlier but the ones that also have the XX and pattern stamp are thought to be from the very beginning of the tested era.

Jethro, beautiful pair of Bulldogs.

Those 1960's stag bulldogs are some of the prettiest knives Case has produced (IMO).
