knife/clean/rtepair kit.....

Post by buddyie22 »

My wife asked me the other day what I wanted for Christmas the Grand kids wanted to know too what Papa wanted. S000... I thought I would go to my knife Bros for some help. I have been accumulating and collecting knives for a while now. My method of operation has been buy a knife, clean it up,using the eraser, real fine steel wool, mineral oil, soap and water in the little jewelry machine and call it good. I'm thinking there is a little more to cleaning a knife than that . I thought it would be good idea to have a kit that has some of the different grits of sand paper, types of cleaning agents that would be helpful in cleaning/restoration/ refurbish etc. Knowing that through out the years many of my friends on AAPK have found things that work, little secrets that make the task at hand easier and less troublesome and more enjoyable. And since I have been a member you guys have always been willing to share your knowledge with those of us that are more challenged in different areas . Would you put together a kit that my Grand kids could shop for and surprise Papa. I think it would be a big help for new guys coming in or the next generation of knife collectors that could benefit and find it all in one place Maybe even a thread could get started. This post has been kind of wordy (sorry) but you get the idea Thanks.

If you’re going to continue to do most of you work by hand without power equipment then I would suggest 3M’s Polishing Paper. It comes in 400 grit to 8000 grit and by working your way through the grits from coarsest to finest you can almost achieve a mirror polish on the bolsters of an old knife, provided they aren’t beaten up too badly.

This is a listing for the 600 grit: http://www.knifemaking.com/product-p/wd115.htm

When I added 3M’s Polishing Paper to my shop it made a big difference in the finish I was getting on the knives I was cleaning.

Dale is a pro, and knows his stuff. In addition to his recommendation, here's the stuff I've used successfully for serious but not aggressive cleaning and preservation. Give your gift givers a list with these items on it. Add a couple lint-free soft cotton rags to the dish soap and mineral oil you already mentioned, and you have a good starter kit. ::tu::

Excellent recommendation! ::tu::
I forgot the Quick Release Oil! ::dang::
Quick Release is the best knife oil I have found, and I think I have tried them all, some twice the price.

Thank you guys for taking the time to post. I'm sure with these products that have been tried and proven will save a lot of time. There is still time before Christmas if there are others that would like to give input and insight for materials and tricks on procedures when cleaning/refurbshing our knives. I'll put the completed list out to the grand kids and see what they come up with. You guys have been great with you ideas and solutions thank you!! ::groove::
