The All Scout Knives Thread

Any of you guys have a Remington scout with pearl handles? I was wondering what the pattern number would be. I have one, but it has no pattern number stamped on it. I would assume since the last number of Remington's pattern is the handle number, and 4 is pearl then the pattern should be RS3334?? I can't seem to find it listed in any books.

There is a listing for the pearl handled Remington Official Boy Scout knife in Official Scout Blades by Ed Holbrook. It has the same blade configuration as the RS3333 official Boy Scout knife which was produced from c1933-1935 (there were other RS3333 editions that were slightly different). This book shows the Mfg. number to be RS3334.

Case "Boy Scouts" knife. I posted photos of this knife several weeks ago, and got a repaly from Steve that is was probably made for Case by another manufacturer, possibly Utica. Since you have all Scout knives in this thread, I thought I would submit a few more photos to see what you guys thought of this knife. As I said in my other post, (there are more photos of this knife on it), I have no idea how to put a value on this piece with nothing to compare it to. Any help would be much appreciated. You guys have some awesome scouts. I knew you had a great collection JR. Here is a couple girl scout knives I picked up. You dont see as many GS knives.

I know these are not official scouts, but I still like them. Most of these were made by A.W.Wadsworth. I've found some made by D.Peres Germany, and Dixon Cutlery Co. Germany. There are some that are stamped Hamilton Brown Shoe Co. I have a couple with VESTAL on the shield. There are a few with a spear blade, screwdriver blade and a awl. The most common handle is brown jigged bone. I have some with rough black scales, tortise shell celluloid, celluloid handles with contrasting celluloid bolsters in three different colors.

Never seen those before. The Stag, Pearl and Celluloid bolster ones are Rare

Thanks guys, Yes, the celluloid bolster scout was made by Wadsworth. I have seen a picture of a cardboard display card for them in a old catalog. I would love to find one.

In response to your PM; the top knife is correct. The bottom one, for whatever reason, has the punch blade and the tin-opener/cap-lifter blades in reversed positions.
There are only two possibilities for that. Either the knife was assembled that way at the factory or it's been taken apart, then reassembled incorrectly.
I have no idea which applies to your knife. I do think the pin (or nail, as MB suggests) through the bail looks a little funny. It should be spun and rounded, not peened flat like it appears to have been. The pin at the top end of the knife is flush with the bolster and virtually not visible, which suggests that it hasn't been messed with or if taken apart, the bolster and pin were properly matched and ground/polished.
The master blade is down a bit short.
Difficult to call, other than to say it's not the standard blade configuration.

Here is a picture of the back side of the knife. It only has one notch cut out on the handle of this knife. The bail does look like it is off another knife.

All in all, I got both of these knives for a total of $33 today. I am still happy with that.

The liner and scale would be notched for the lift stud on the front side.

The bail isn't original, that's for sure.

The other Camper knife has a notch in the front and the back of the handle. The notch on the back allows access to the punch blade nail nick.

I am just wondering why the Scout one, doesn't have the notch in the handle, if the can opener should be in the front? It doesn't look like this knife has been apart, but I am still learning...

Other than the bail and pin being replaced, I don`t think it has been apart.

I have an old Robeson Scout with no notches on either the punch or the can/bottle opener.

Has anyone purchased a Remington RS4233 R2 Official Boy Scouts of America 2010 knife?

One of my best friends was very involved in scouting back when his son was growing up and now his son, who is in his 40s is still involved in scouting. Given this, I decided, even though my buddy's a train guy and not a knife guy, a 2010 Scout knife would be a good birthday present for his 69th birthday. I found one at a good price and ordered it. It came today. What a POS. It looks like something that was made in Japan in the 70s. Everything is just flat ground. There are no radiused corners on the handles or bolsters. I'm terribly disappointed and am seriously considering returning it. I would be embarrassed to give this as a gift. I'll post pictures tomorrow when it's light enough to take some. I would appreciate other opinions. I understand these were made by MGC and I had higher expectations.

Not exactly the next day but finally got around to taking some pictures. I was going to send it back but waited too long, now I'm stuck with it. I guess my buddy will end up getting it for his birthday after all.

The pictures don't really do it justice. You need to have it in your hand to see just how poorly this knife is made and feel all the sharp edges. The backs of the blades and edges of the bone handles where they made the "blade access dwells" are sharp enough to cut you. The awl blade wobbles in both open and closed positions. The biggest insult I can make to this knife is, I've seen better fit and finish on Chinese knives. Over all, it's just not a very well made knife and I think the Boy Scouts, Remington and MGC should all be embarrassed to have their name associated with this knife.

Wow.....I wanted to get one... ..sorry to hear that ,Jerry.
If I remember correctly those are going for $75-$95........lot of $$ to put out for a knife that looks like it was made in China.
I own a couple Bear & Sons .... one is the Damascus Trapper with MOP scales....its ok but I believe it could stand a good buffing around the edges of the bolsters to give it a better feel.

Anyone else buy one of these and have the same trouble? I will give them the benefit of the doubt that this one slipped out in such poor condition before I pass final judgement.
