Stern & Schasseur Unique knife

A small 6 bladed knife with pearl handles approx. 3 inches long the handles are have a small crack on each side with a nice bar shield... the liners are milled the blades which are in good condition include 2 regular knife blades corkscrew fingernail file button hook and scissors 3 blades are marked one side (Stern & Schasseru) Other side (Unique) in cursive style....looking in my books I couldn't find this knife then on the computer I found a small corn razor with these marking enclosed below I believe the knife to be a hundred plus years old
I would like to know more information about this knife anything would help

I cannot see either name in A. Carter's book that lists all German knife and sword manufacturers. "Stern & Schasseur" is likely a merchant name, perhaps a wholesaler, or retail store, etc. and not the manufacturer.
Small multiblades that include personal grooming tools were common 100 and more years ago and made in both Germany and Britain (Sheffield).
The level of craftsmanship is high to get all the blades into the small space and get spring tension just right, etc. However they are under appreciated by the majority of knife collectors in North America so only a few of us collect them. There are still many of these style knives 'around' and prices are therefore low.
One silly thing is that very few collectors will purchase any knife with a crack in the handle. I say "silly" because cracks are given much greater significance than other issues such as worn blades, poor snap, blade play, etc.
I like these vintage 'Gent's' multiblades so thanks for posting it.

Nice find. Very similar characteristics to a small 3-inch 10 blade grooming knife I have, including the blades, liners and pearl handle covers. The button hook tells you the knife is probably from the later 1800s - early 1900s period. The corkscrew is for opening small bottles of cologne, patent medicines and such which at that time were corked.

A historical perspective into life around the dawn of the 20th century. Roland is right in that unfortunately these little gems are under-appreciated. Probably should be posted in the rare tang stamps thread also.

Wow.....thanks Ken & Roland for the information.. I really enjoyed the rare tang stamp thread I think It's super....
I agree that there are more rare and interesting knives out there... in fact I think I have some and when I get a chance to look over my collection and find the knives I'll post them
Sadly collectors do place more importance on the condition of handles and blades....rather than the historical value and service these knives gave to the previous owners....
Hopefully that will change as new collectors come along....Wishful thinking
