Blade Nail Nicks and Long Pulls – Old and New
Re: Blade Nail Nicks and Long Pulls – Old and New
I think it is interesting to see the same knife pattern from the same maker, showing how they varied the pulls. That is really cool.
Here is one (I don't own but wish I did) that I think is very well done. A simple long pull, but it fits the blade really well and really adds to the look of the knife. This is a 2012 ivory handled cotton sampler by Tuna Valley (made by Great Eastern). The picture is from Frank's Classics website.

Also, forgot to mention. I remember seeing a knife some time ago that had a nail pull on both sides of the blade. I can't remember if I saw it here, or elsewhere on the internet, but it definitely sticks in my mind. Does anyone remember seeing that knife?

Rookie, you may have been thinking of this knife.
Been wanting to put it and others up here for a while.
It's a very small Congress Waterville. 2 3/4"

That is no doubt one of my favorite knives of all Joe and with pulls on both sides ... It has been since the time you first posted it ... can't remember but the photos make it appear to be a congress whittler??

Yes I do believe that was the one. For some reason I was thinking it had nail nicks on both sides, not long pulls. But I definitely remember the yellow handles. Very nice.

How about the "through-n-through" pull on this Scagel Fruitport.

And the pinned on arrowhead shield and those great stag handles and that wonderful Wharncliffe blade. How about that.QTCut5 wrote:How about the "through-n-through" pull on this Scagel Fruitport.

Re: Blade Nail Nicks and Long Pulls – Old and New
This is a knife ol' Sporty had for sale on theBay yesterday that I thought for sure was a "Frankenknife." I get home, open Sargent's 2nd Ed., look for a Remington R6393 and there she is on Page 365. The first blood groove Saber long pull I've noticed.

Are you telling me it's supposed to look that way? From the factory? Not an oops?

Well, I'll be. EVERYTHING about that knife is OUTSTANDING except that goofy groove in the main blade. Can we go back in time and whoop the idiot that thought that was cool?
Well John, looks like you got yourself a very distinctive high dollar winner. Congratulations buddy.

Craziest blade I've ever seen, wonder how Remington came up with that one?

Re: Blade Nail Nicks and Long Pulls – Old and New
Some nice long pulls added there Joe
John - A Remington blood groove long pull in a whittler pattern - no doubt unique for sure Wonder why a blood groove in a whittler or was it a blade also used in some other Remington patterns where a blood groove made more sense... Just curious but was that considered an early Remington or hard to tell - I know the Remington stamps changed just slightly in some respect during given time frames... anyway that is one sweet knife John!!

That blood groove in a pocket knife is a new one for me. I do not suppose that it has any practical purpose, but it sure makes for a unique knife. Thanks for posting that one!

Re: Blade Nail Nicks and Long Pulls – Old and New
In boot camp, the Drill Instructors told us that groove down the side of a Ka-Bar was called a "blood groove". They said it's purpose was to help break the suction when you stuck the blade into the enemy and make it easier to pull the blade out.Dinadan wrote:That blood groove in a pocket knife is a new one for me. Er uh. Found out some 30-40 years later that they were full of beans and taters. While colloquially it's called a "blood groove", the actual name for it is "Fuller" and the actual purpose is to improve the lateral stiffness of the blade for a given weight. It's a bit like, say, an I beam compared to a simple beam.
How that relates to the OP knife I can't say. Maybe it was added to serve as the second purpose of a fuller, decoration.

Found another one hiding in my pile. Sorry to , but I wonder why more knife manufacturers don't use this thru-n-thru style? I really think it's the best pull ever invented.
