I've Been Informed I Don't Know Crap

Post by RobesonsRme.com »

I saw this Robeson stag handled Norfolk whittler listed on Ebay yesterday with a Buy-It-Now price of $287.99.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Robeson-RS47GS- ... 1962583488

Knife is new, in the box, just as Queen made it.

Seller listed the knife as having been made by Robeson in Perry, New York in the 1950's or 60's.

Seller stated that all proceeds were to go to charity.

So, since I thought he wasn't likely to get any charitable bids, I sent him a message suggesting that price was high and not likely to sell and also informed him the knife had been made by Queen Cutlery, was a reproduction and less than ten years of age.

I thought I sounded nice....

"Your knife will never sell for that asking price, unless someone just chooses to make a charitable donation and get the knife in return.
You are completely wrong in your description and dating of the knife.
It was not made by Robeson. They have been out of business, as you apparently know, since 1965.
Your knife is a very recent reproduction made and marketed by Queen Cutlery Co.
I cannot provide an actual date of manufacture, but it's less than ten years old.
An Ebay search for completed auctions of similar knives would give you a better idea of value."

He replied with a rather blistering retort:

"You don't know crap Charlie!! Queen never made the Pocket Eze Recessed Blades and never ever made this packaging and never stamped these knives this way. From 1965 Camillus made knives for Robeson and did so for 7 Years, You need to bone up on your knives friend!!!"

He expounds about the PocketEze recessed blades, yet his knife doesn't even have flush blades, none of the Queen so-called "PocketEze" patterns have flush blades.

I think I'm just going to send him the aforementioned list of completed Ebay auctions for that exact knife in that exact box and say nothing else.

I guess I should have just minded my own business. ::facepalm::

Phil, I would do that, but the website is down, inaccessible and nobody seems interested in fixing the problem. Lots of finger pointing, but no solutions.

I sent him this:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=Ro ... r&_sacat=1

Questionable as to whether or not a light will go off.

BTW; my Ebay ID is "RCCCollector.nut" and that would have been on the message I sent.

I didn't tell him he didn't know "crap".

I think he is not a nice man.

First Texan I've met that wasn't.

Can't send links through the eBay message system. I get around it by putting the link or email address in a plain white image and attaching the image to the message. Example below.

Well, after looking at some of his other listings, I've decided he is either rather completely uninformed, lives in his own collectible cutlery fantasy world or he is a totally deceptive con-man.

Multiple knives are listed as being from times during which they could not have possibly existed and as TripleF stated, his prices are way out of line.

Take, for instance, this "1920's" Boker English Jack with what are so obviously DELRIN!!!! handles.

Buy-It-Now over $150.00

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Boker-Tree-Bran ... xyOlhS2Jto

He has over 2700 positive feedbacks.

Go figure.

Reckon his head would explode if I sent him a message to tell him his 1920s Boker was really made in 1982?
The fact that he has such a high number of positive feedback is evidence that there truly is a sucker born every minute.

And then there's this "Pre-1965" Uncle Henry by Schrade-Walden.

$215.99

I don't know much about Schrade, but I'm pretty sure that knife does not pre-date 1965.

For the most part, I've not had many good experiences when I inform an Ebay seller that their listed info is wrong. I usually get various comments about how I don't know what I'm talking about, or I should mind my own business, or they say "I don't know, this is just how I got it, and I'm not an expert."

It seems to me that most are content to lie/cheat/steal their way into getting as much $ as possible from any buyer. Their philosophy is, If someone isn't smart enough to know what they're buying, that's their own tough luck.

I know the feller you're talking about. Everything I've ever seen from him is three prices. I have made him a reasonable offer before, and he has countered with a substantially lower than listed offer. But since his original price was three prices too high his counter was at least two prices too high!

I don't even bother with his listings anymore.

Charlie, we've got a few like that. Unfortunately one is one too many. Seems to be getting worse as we get more transplants from other places. ::facepalm:: Not sure what this guys story is but everything he has listed is waaaay overpriced. Don't know if his charity story is legit or not. ::shrug::
Like the Colonel says, I don't even look at his listings.

I have written this guy before and I think it is a waste of time.
I too have wondered about the legitimacy of his 'charity.'
I also agree his prices are 3 to 4 times what they should be.

The Schrade Walden Uncle Henry from pre-1965....... Charlie knows Robeson and I know a little about Schrade.

#1- The first Uncle Henry listed in the Schrade Catalogs appeared in 1967 Short Line catalog; the 987UH.
#2- The real #804UH, Journeyman, was a 2-3/4" penknife with a shackle on one end. It first appeared in the Schrade catalogs in 1997 and last appeared in the catalog was 2001.
804UH Journeyman.jpg
As you can see from my 804UH the knife in that fellow's "charity' auction is not a real 804UH.
#3- The knife he has listed is a Schrade Open Stock 804 pattern, the Mechanic's Whittler with some later Uncle Henry paperwork and box to make it look like an Uncle Henry.

This is one of his more blatant, for lack of a more charitable term, "fantasy knives," with a Twilight Zone price!

Charlie, it appears to me that you know far more about Schrade than this 'gentleman' does! ::tu::

Back when we had a decent chat room, this guy came in and offered some knives on the old thurs. night auction. It's been a while, but there were several problems involved in his buying and selling. It didn't take long to "expunge" this guy by some of our more colorful chatters. I had to call my tech guy to get the DITW sight from showing up on my frequently searched list. He,IMHO, is a con artist.

Charlie, he's the Texas version of Eugene only he doesn't claim all his knives come from a famous collector's estate. His claim to fame is an "Official eBay for charity listing". Usually he has some really fine knives that appear to be genuine but are priced in the stratosphere (in the name of charity?).

He's pretty far off base on this one though: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Camillus-Bone-S ... SwbdpWY7Sg

Far too much of this out there. What gets me is the overuse of the term "vintage." I recently saw a GEC N'field knife made in 2008 being advertised as "vintage." 2008 is vintage? Really... ?

Also reminds me a knife seller that has his own retail shop (should know better) handing me an old queen w' delrin covers telling me it was black cherry. I told him that must be what they call the color, but it clearly wasn't wood. Nope, he wasn't having that; good old black cherry wood he says. ::facepalm:: ::shrug::
