Maki brand, 3 piece Laguiole
Picked up an old, but seemly unused 3 piece Laguiole by Maki. As for as I can figure, this was a small scale manufacturer in Thiers in the later 20th century. The original craftsman passed away in 1997 and the business came under new ownership, but I don't know to what degree the firm kept producing...

Re: British and Commonwealth Military Knives
Couldn't find anything specific in Flook's book. Many of the WW1 production ones have substitute materials for the handles, like pressed fiber. I would assume that's what this is, except for the lack of broad arrow mark. Here's an article on the manufacturer: https://www.hawleysheffieldknives.com/n-...

I forgot to add another interesting butterfly knife in my collection. This is a Böntgen & Sabin of Solingen (better, latter known as "Bonsa") penknife from the 1880s-1920s. 20221010_204356 (2).jpg 20221010_204250 (2).jpg 20221010_204603 (2).jpg 20221010_204453 (3).jpg 20221010_204717.j...

Re: Hemming Woodsman butterfly knife, ca. 1910, made in USA.
I got in contact with the New Haven history museum and they pulled an article out of the archives. Unfortunately, nothing pertaining directly to this butterfly knife in particular, but something relevant to the history of the company. Sta Brite1024_1 (2).jpg They changed the named to Sta-Brite at so...

Text looks like the Arabic alphabet, could be in Arabic, Persian or a couple other languages. There's a long tradition of fine pocket knives in Iran, but it could be from anywhere, as far as I know.

Re: Hemming Woodsman butterfly knife, ca. 1910, made in USA.
Found a little more information, a short 1918 biographical article on one of eponymous Hemming Brothers: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~ctnhvbio/Hemming_Carl.html It doesn't contain any information on this knife specifically, but it does cover the company that made it. I think they made most of their b...

Hemming Woodsman butterfly knife, ca. 1910, made in USA.
One of the earliest (I believe the 2nd, after a Billings and Spencer model) butterfly knives made in the US, is the Hemming Woodsman. As best I can tell, the Hemming Brothers Cutlery company operated in New Haven, CT from around 1905 to the mid-1920s. It is a large, robust hunting knife. The handles...

Re: Mystery fish-shaped knife.
Thank you, I suspect that BF post is correct and that it is likely Chinese. Probably before they were regularly putting country of manufacture on them. If this is old enough, I imagine it was still a product of state industry. I wonder if these were primarily domestic or export? Also, I can see now ...

Re: Mystery fish-shaped knife.
Possibly, but I speak a little Japanese (and read far less) and I don't think its a letter or Kanji character. The 3 horizontal lines could be a Chinese numeral 3. The Korean hangul alphabet has some syllables that look similar, with a circle shaped section, but none connected to left facing horizon...

Mystery fish-shaped knife.
Hoping to figure out where and when this was made and any other interesting information. Seller got it from an estate auction in the UK and believed it was made in the 1960s, probably based on the collection it was in. A flat-stamped, all stainless steel, fish shaped slipjoint with protruding pins. ...

Handsome knife, and a good deal too. I picked up a "Pradel" styled knife with juniper scales recently from the same manufacturer, not as luxe as that one though.

Re: A barlow from Korea
Feels solid, its in virtually mint condition. The covers are quite thin and flat. The backspring is firm, with a good half stop, but not too stiff. It's easy enough to open it with the nail nick, but you could just about pinch it too. The factory edge is unimpressive, but I like the relatively tall ...

Recent acquisition, thought I'd share it here.
I assume United is the name of the company, and this knife was made in South Korea. If anyone knows anything more about the company or its history, I'd like to know.

20220504_190355 (2).jpg I have an old ring locking knife from France, and I've learned a bit about its history. No, the blade is dull and I haven't sharpened it. I typically don't sharpen and use vintage knives in my collection, as I have no shortage of nice, sharp, contemporary knives at hand.I suspect it would work fine, although it might not hold an edge for too long, as it is an older stainless steel.
