ADDITIONAL INFO:     I am not sure when this knife was made, though I would guesstimate from the construction and the materials used that it was made around the time of World War II or shortly thereafter. I base this on the materials in the knife, all steel except for the handles, the type of cardboard and printing on the box and the guarantee printed on the box. “The I Witness Trade Mark in use for over 100 years is the buyer’ s safeguard against inferior goods. All articles so marked are guaranteed perfect.”

According to Goin’s Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings, Taylor’s (eye) Witness Sheffield was used from about 1836 until he published his encyclopedia in 1998. He listed it as circa 1836-present, but obviously a lot has taken place in the world and in the cutlery industry since 1998. I think the box reflects a much earlier style of printing and grade of cardboard than is used today. If Goins date is correct this knife would have been made after 1936 and probably no later than the 1950s. It’s in remarkably good condition for being so old.

I have a second one of these knives which has been lightly used and has no box. I have carried it a few times and used it. I love the blade shape and the good steel! The deep grooves in the handle and the shape of the handle allow someone with arthritis in their hands, such as myself, to get a good grip on this knife.
