ADDITIONAL INFO: According to Harvey Platts book, The Knife Makers Who Went West, the Black Beauty series of knives first appeared in catalogs in 1960. According to the 1960 catalog reprint in Platts book, the F66 was 8-3/4” OAL and the blade was 4-1/2”. This means this blade could be ¼" short. I have found the measurements in Platts book to be somewhat off. The explanation I have received from a friend who collects Western knives is that the knives were hand ground and some grinders took more off of the blades than others. I have also found Western knives that had definitely been used and sharpened but whose blades were longer than the actual dimensions listed in the catalog. This explanation seems logical to me because they were a hand ground knife and not machine ground or “fine blanked” as were the blades in the Schrade factory and others. While this old knife definitely has it’s battle scars and scratches, it is still a Western knife, and it will take and hold a great edge! A good starter knife for a young hunter, a sharp knife and easy to resharpen.
