Re: Using The Right Steel For The Job
I've come to hate stainless, a fillet knife is my only stainless - other than kitchen knives (but I want carbon). I'm curious what you mean by stainless and what you hate about it. Maybe hate is to strong of a word. Carbon steel has character (patina) and I don't really care that I have an unblemis...

Maybe he just wanted the FREE medical, Dental, and vision that we as taxpayers have to pay for. Those that don't care for their personal freedom take advantage of these freebies. I get pissed of when I think of California's system where each prisoner costs 10x as each student costs - and they're clo...

That's because they're always in schools, Jerry!!! ::facepalm:: I just had to say it! NYUK! NYUK! NYUK! WB :D It can be very easy to outsmart schooled fish. Catch the first fish - crappie on Clearlake Ca. in this case. Get some monofilament and attach a large snap swivel to one end. The length of m...

Re: Using The Right Steel For The Job
With all the different steels out there today it can make choosing a new knife somewhat confusing. ::uc:: I like tool steels primarily over stainless and carbon steels for a day fishing a stream for trout and daily use. For hiking I like to take a simple carbon steel knife and a fixed blade with O-1...

Hukk, I received your donated knife and it is terrific. Absolutely gorgeous. To say I am pleased is hardly adequate. Moreover I have not acquainted myself with the Bulldog label. That is about to change. Thank you very much. QS You're welcome. I'm glad you like it. The Bulldog knives with natural m...

Perfect knife for hunting as well as many other chores. The styles haven't changed much for 100's of years - no need to, very utilitarian. A nice looking Finn.

With the double dog head tang stamp that knife was made anywhere between mid 2000 through 2003. 2004 started the fighting dogs again.

Well, I've used all of those knives at one time or another, except a peanut. I had to go with the whittler though. What no sowbelly?

I am sure somebody knows more about these than I do. Maybe more pictures will help. My understanding on the 4 7/8 folding hunters is that the long pulls are 2nd generation. In the books the first and second generation knives are listed together. The second generation knives are built in quantities ...

Sorry Hukk. Hate to burst your bubble but you burst mine  . I also have a 2006 #73 stag with no serial# and spey etch and I was thinking the same as you. Re: A few good dogs
BKC stands for B ulldog K nife C lub and the numbers were assigned to the knives to identify them. The use of the BKC numbers ended at about the transition period between the 3rd and 4th generations. The fourth generation was badly documented. There are some transition knives that have BKC numbers -...

Re: Stag Dogs
There is a definite deference between what some refer to as true 1st generation knives and second run 1st generation knives. Compare the two 1985 knives below. The top one is a 1st generation knife. The pulls have more serrations, the shield is pointed, the stag is finished quite differently. Was t...

Re: A few good dogs
Both are third generation knives, 1993 to 1995. The Gold Dust Toothpick is from 1993 (1993 was the first year the toothpick was in the Bulldog line up) and it's the first year that Jim Parker ordered the knives from Friedrich Olbertz. 1993 is also the first year that Bulldog used surgical instrument...

I was able to obtain a copy of the volume 3 guide published in 1997 from Amazon.com. Volume 3 has color photos of 1st & 2nd generation knives together and points out some differences between them. Even so, I am still guessing much of the time. As far as I know, the Parker's books are the best y...

Re: Damascus Knives
There is a lot of "Damascus" coming out of India for one. I don't really know how good these are - I see a lot of gaps on some of those brass bolsters. The seller states that their "knife makers are expert blade smiths." BUT the seller also says that 15N20 is a low carbon steel -...

*UPDATE* Folks, it seems I've made a rather large faux pas regarding the above knife. After talking with several fellow collectors, as well as seeing that someone has also been in contact with the seller with the same conclusion, it seems that the knife IS legit. There is a pin hole in the handles ...

I really enjoy the quality of these Bulldog Old Dominion Club knives. They usually have better quality stag than the standard production knives. All are First Generation.

Yeah, I bet it would bring more money with those pictures showing blades in near new condition. I'm no Remington expert but that looks very nice. Last picture shows a milled center liner.

Those look awesome. I've watched a couple shows called "Meteorite Men" or something like that. I am amazed at how much they are worth - $20 to $30 per gram and even more for some of the rarer types. Some were valued at well over $100 per gram - better than gold! There is one knife making c...

Re: Show off your favorite GECs!
The serial numbering system was different in year 1. They were numbered per pattern , rather than per each particular handle material. They wouldnt have been numbered 1-11 nessesarily, unless they were the first 1-11 made in that pattern.I think its right myself.Justolds is #217 i think, and j5's is ...
