Thats nice. Smiling knife could probly tell you something about you find.

I've seen something like that before, and if my memory hasn't total gone yet, I believe that's for carving. A small spoke shave, and the piece on the end is not sharp, but is a handle to use the knife with two hands.

Looks like a ferriers knife to me. It is used to trim horses hooves before putting on horseshoes. Hope this helps.

It is a ferriers knife (hoof pick). They look similar to a tree scribe but are a bit different. That's also a pretty current knife.

I'm no expert on knives, but I'm still not convinced. Farrier's knives have a wide, sharpened bend, parallel to the cutting edge of the blade, and is used to cut or scrape away excess material or debri from the sole of the foot. ( Not to confused with a hoof pick which is a different tool, has no cutting edge, and is used to dislodge foreign objects from the cleft of the frog, or stuck in the sole. )

The piece on the end of the blade of this knife is not sharp, as it would be on a farrier's knife, and it is not a hook as a pick would be. It's thick and smooth like a handle, and I believe it would be to help guide the blade in some task.

Where are our horsemen ? And where's the gut hook guy ?

hey fran, i'm still here, just doing more research on it. i don't think it's a zipper for game any more but i don't think it's a draw knife either.

I've seen it before Johnnie, and I wish I knew where.

isn't that a variation of a hoof knife?

one very similar to this one was described as a boot/shoe making tool. to cut the sole and not cut into the boot upper.

You mean like a..........draw knife ?

Nope, nope, nope. Not with that handle. A shoemaker's knife would be an industrial knife, and probably a fixed blade. I think this is a consumer product.
