All About Pocket Knives

I was so inspired by CarvingDon to try my hand at a carving project, so I decided that ole Uncle Henry and I would try to carve a ball in a cage. Here is a pic of the beginning stage. Hope you enjoy. Will post pics as I go along.

Just want to give updates on the ball in a cage project.





Here is the finished Ball in a Cage and the two knives that I used with the blades that I used to carve it out. As you can see the bottom end of the cage has room for a chain link, that is my next step, to carve a chain link onto it.

Great job Keith keep the photos comin' on that chain link as well.

Was fortunate not to cut myself, however in due time I am sure I probally will.

I finally got some wood from the local craft store. I don't know if I'll be posting any pics as I suspect my carving will leave alot to be desired. I might try what Keith did with the ball in cage design.

I hope that you do try to whittle out the ball in a cage, I found it on the general forum here. It has a web site with the instructions to do the ball in a cage. It is fairly simple. I whittled mine out of pine but basswood would be better. I will see if I can find that post for you.

Look in the general discussion forum, page 4, subject is titled An Old Time, a cage and a ball, open it up and there is a web site on that post, just click on it and there you go. Just whittle away. Good luck and keep your knife SHARP.

hey johnnie, I got some bloodstains on my carvings I slit my thumb open last week! Also cut the inside of my left index finger....

keep your knife sharp, and pick up some band aids

Thanks for the info Keith, I will have to look that up and see what it says. I will use my favorite Queen swell center whittler in D2, and see what happens.

Jim, glad to hear you got some wood, did you get basswood?
Let me know how you like that Queen swell center whittler. I will probably get one eventually along with the serpentine model they make for S&M Enjoy!

TM, I have carved AND "stained" at the same time on a few occasions Just try to keep the "serious" cuts to a minimum . Actually, it's always a good idea to wear a carving glove. It won't withstand a poke or stab, but a glance or slice off the glove will protect you. Here are a couple examples of the carving glove, one has blue "grippy" dots.

That's what makes it a project redferd! Like the chainlink.

Technically you carve the ball larger than the openings on the cage........I couldn't think of how to say that till I saw Jonet's post.
