All About Pocket Knives

UpNorth mentioned Herman Williams, and I thought I'd request that if anyone has a Herman Williams embellished Schrade knive, to post here and share. Being kind of new, not sure if all that participate know of his excellent work. He is pretty well known for his Sambar Stag handles and filework done aftermarket on regular production Schrade knives. He was so good, that Schrade hired him for awhile and he still does it and sells his knives on Ebay. His look is unmistakeable. Really nice stuff.



This is a 98OT, I bought in 2007. He completely disassembles the knives, as his name and the year are engraved inside the liners. No file work on this one, just mirror polished the blades and put on the Sambar.

He is in poor health, and says he is probably not going to do any more work on knives this year. I wish him well, and pray for Herman to get well.

Got a few here for ya Thawk, they're my absolute favorite "customs" (I really consider them Schrades as well ). I wish him a speedy recovery as well, it must be driving him nuts not to be tinkering with some Schrade steel:

Dang that's nice Charlie ! here's the 5OT, took a few quick shots, but unfortunately I didn'y get a clear shot of the inside view before it got dark, the guy sure knows his filework! By the way, I believe he also did the filework on the bone 80th anniversary barlows that were used for photo samples and salesman samples. You can see that signature vine pattern, versus a more haphazard pattern on the regular production bone 80ths.

Nice knives guy's, don't have any of Herman's work, They seemed to appear often for a while ago on e-bay, not seen any for some time.

All very nice hope to have one someday too. He will be in my prayers. Hope he gets well.

Herman has been an inspiration to me. I started customizing Schrade knives before I ever heard about him, but once I saw his work, how could I not be inspired? His is the name that jumps to the top whenever customized Schrades are mentioned. I don’t have any of his knives, but I have admired many of them in pictures.

I wish him well & will keep him in my prayers also.

It looks torched Don, could either be done using a torch or holding it on the buffer loner than normal until it scorches it. I have the best luck with a torch.

The color goes into all the low spots when you look close, so I think it is dye that does it. That, and a very even color. He must dye them after the shaping is finished!!??!! Burnishing or torching tends to hit the highlights more. Either look is cool in its own right.

I don't have any of Herman Williams customized knives either however I did buy this salesman's roll of Nagle Re-Blade blades from him. It did have a small bone handeled pen knife in the roll.

I notice that some of the blades that look like duplicates have a differently shaped kick. Is that for different handle patterns ?

George, it's Electra 225. He hasn't sold anything since this past July though due to a much needed rest after some repair work to the old ticker. Said he probably wouldn't be back for the rest of the year. Here's hoping he's doing well!

good news is that he has been busy as evident by his auctions in the last several weeks. he has had some full customs , rebladed examples, and some re-handled/polished ones that are just gorgeus. couldn't help myself and picked up 2 of them myself. i told herman i could'nt wait to show my wife whats she's getting me for xmas!!----he joked and told me that was very good, because he had bought his wife '55 chev parts for xmas in the past!!
