All About Pocket Knives

I've never seen a stockman using a spear blade as the main blade before. It would look more at home on a canoe. Also, the etching is very different from most bulldogs. Can this knife be for real? I have no reason to suspect it's not. The 1999 Standing Dog tang stamp places it as 4th generation which is not documented very well. Has anyone heard of this one before?

That is a 3-1/2 inch Cattle Knife (vs. the Bulldog Cattle King). Here is a picture of my Prototypes. They are nice knives.

They also made them in the 3rd Generation. Here is a rare horn prototype (1 of 5) which is when they started making the Cattle Knife in 1995. (BKC 604 thru BKC 619 for the 3rd generation series).

The 4th generation is by far the least documented generation of all. The 3rd generation has a clip blade and the fouth generation has a spear blade. I figure a lot of the details were lost when Jim Parker died.

It is a real Bulldog knife, but I do not know if it is a special order or if it may have been 2 of Jim's dogs.

If you look in old cutlery catalogs, the spear blade was common on cattle knives. For some reason, around the 1940's, spear blades and the patterns with spear blades kind of diminished (except scout or camp knives), and have made a comeback somewhat (like yours). In the late 40's and early 50's, Schrade, for example had only one Cattle knife, and it had a clip.

Here's a link to the 1926 Schrade Catalog with about 15 different cattle knives, and a couple 1920 Western States Cattle knives. Wish I had the real ones to show. Look up the Schrade Cut 9173 on page 20 in the catalog.
