All About Pocket Knives

I recently purchased these knives from a dealer that mostly sells Nascar Stuff now.......I don't like that the knives don't say Germany or Solingen on them.....but they were not a bad price for Ivory and Mother of pearl.

Does anyone know when they were made....and where the "Master Cutlers" made them?

Also, all that is on the Blades is Double Bulldog Heads and Hand Made. The back of the main blade has an R on both knives.

The Ivory Knife appears to be yellow in the picture...It is definately Ivory.

im not a bulldog knife expert but i believe they are newer knives, made since 2000 since they have the double dog heads stamp and i think they still make them in germany although they arent stamped germany. they are nice looking knives

Thank you Steve.....I did get them, cause I liked them!....other than that I know nothing more than that they are well made.

They probably didn't have a stamp small enough to fit those blades.

This one is for your blade envey Mike. The 06247PEN is 3 7/8 " closed, mine is dark bone from 1981.

I put it with a 06244 & a 6233 so you can see the size.....I know it's still no Trapper!

I don't know how many of these 47's are out there......have been looking for more.

Hey Pen & Toothpick, I love that pattern too! I just got one off Ebay in Red Bone. XX USA. 1965-69. I believe it is a 2 blade Stockman, as opposed to a pen. Although it only has 2 blades, I believe the 47 pattern is a Stockman. Someone will correct me or confirm me before too long. Whatever they call them, I think they are great knives! Smoke

Hey guys, I just got a nice 06247PEN off eBay. Nice size and weight for a totin' knife if you like a clip master blade. It's much lighter than the 6347. Mine's a '79 model and mint. Got some good older EDCs with spear masters so I guess I'll put this one away. It is a nice practical pattern though.

Gunsmoke...the interesting thing is it actually has "06247PEN" stamped on the blade.......as I think Jands also noted....it is a stockman pattern number in 2,3 and four blades.....and I think there were 2 blade Jacks too.

I would be interested in knowing if your 60's two blade has "06247PEN" on the blade also.

Hey P&T, my 1965-69 has only 06247 stamped on the tang. That is why I thought it was a 2 blade Stockman. I have a Goins and a Sargents, and I will do a little more research later, but I am too tired tonight. It does look like a Pen pattern, except for the size. Not too many pens that big. I bet somebody can tell us exactly what it is all about off the top of their head! Smoke

it's classified as a pen when there is a pen blade as opposed to a spey. that big frame is used for several variations. great knives.

Hey Johnnie, any idea what year they changed the tang stamp from 06247 to 06247PEN? Obviously between 1969 and 1979? Thanks, Smoke

both stamps 06247 pen, 06247 were used as well as 06247 sp. but i don't know what years each were made or when certain patterns were discontinued. a lot of 247 variations with three patterns and all the various handle materials. one of the guys that knows more or more accurate info will correct me or add to the info.

Johnnie always seems to be on the spot!.....I forget where that comes from, but have not heard it in awhile. Johnnie and the band of AAPK others have taught me so much on here.

To me Stockman and two blades are a contradiction in knives......when I think Stockman..I think a well stocked knife!

I think I am in the minority.....I collect one and two blade knifes.

I think we got off the subject of Bulldog knives and onto a discussion of variations of the 47 pattern Cases. While we are here I'll add another variation. I have a set of Case 47 pattern 3 blade whittlers from 1993. They have the clip master on one end and small clip and coping blade on the other end. Stamped as follows:
06347 SC (second cut bone stag)
06347 RPB (dark red picked bone)
06347 PSB (peachseed picked bone)
This was the first time Case made the 47 pattern in a whittler. I will try to get some pics later.

ok, back on the original post. did these bulldogs have the country of origin lightly etched on the blades. like the chinese knives or were they made in germany, not for export?

A good question Johnnie, I have sold a pen knife that was genuine tortoise shell (from left over 1930's era scales) 2 5/8 inch pen knife and it had stamped tangs, I believe 1996, a Standing Dog and HAND MADE (4th generation) on one side. I don't remember what the other side had. I just had pictures of one side, but they certainly could have put Solingen Germany on it. (My files were getting to big) Bulldog has had knives made in USA, but never in China that I ever heard about.

I can't post it, it's no longer mine. They had stamps that fit those tangs!

hukk, i've seen the small stamps as well. i did not think they were made in china, just etched with the country of origin like the chinese knives, easily buffed off?

Yes, even Simichrome or the finest polish will smear the etch. You don't want the frosted etch looking all shiney. Frosted Etch or Reverse Frosted Etch - I don't try to clean. I never found anything that that will give results that will satisfy me.

I would realy doubt that there ever was any light etch on the blades. The dealer I got them from had at least 5 or 6 new in boxes. I believe there were Buffalo horn and pink M of Pearl also. Unless they did say CHINA and he buffed them off!
